Pope Benedict XVI is holding meetings with 24 Irish Catholic bishops on the subject of child sex abuse this weekend and early next week.

In what may be the first gathering of its kind, the Pope will speak at the Vatican with senior figures of the Catholic church and the  Conference of Irish Bishops about the problem of child sex abuse by clergy, the Irish Times reported.

The discussions follow the publication of the Ryan report on child abuse in May 2009 and the Murphy report on sex abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin in November.

Bishop Donal Murray, who resigned as Bishop of Limerick, and Bishop John Magee, who lost his position as Bishop of Cloyne, will not attend, according to the Irish Times.

But Jim Moriarty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, will be present, although he offered his resignation to the pope in December. Pope Benedict has yet to accept his resignation.

In 2002 Pope John Paul II held a similar meeting with US cardinals following reports of clerical sex abuse in the US, but he did not invite the full Conference of American Catholic Bishops.

No I think it was the Three Stooges you were thinking about, I should be so broke as the church of Rome.
Yes, kickstar... I can think of a few else that do the opposite of what Christ teaches... you, for starters. BTW, a few facts for you - the Catholic Church is financially broke in case you didn't know. Any things it has in the way of what you call treasures were donated by rich people, artists, ambassadors of the world-wide community and us street Catholics in our humility of respect to God. Nothing wrong with that I think, like the Three Wise Men whose humility brought gold, myrrh and incense to the stable where our Saviour was born. No gift from us would be strong enough for His birth or resurrection. Well, maybe just one – repentance. And that doesn’t cost a cent or a penny.
jacersisityourself you are priceless...What on Earth has Christianity got to do with the Roman Church ??. Do you really think Jesus would consider Vatican Inc.an organization representative of what he preached when he was on earth,? When was it that he said yes get trillions gathered up in our own banks and we can live in palaces like the princes we are, Where and when did he ok that way of life. But he did say "You will know them by their fruit" He did say to the Rich man was "Give away your wealth and follow me" The Roman church does the opposite. God said Thou shalt rest on the seventh day...They do the opposite they rest on the first day.God in his commandments handed down to Moses said. You shalt not make any images of anything on the earth or under it or under the sea and bow down before it. The church of Rome does the opposite..Can you think of anyone else who does the opposite to what God teaches??
An Englishman called Nicky Breakspear gave his blessing for an invasion and subjugation of a People namely the Irish people and in return he wanted a penny from every citizen of that land forever and some eeejits are still paying that extortion to the latest extortionist benny the kraut of course Nicky breakspear was pope adrian iv and the extortion later became known as Peters Pence.
An afterthought: In 2002 the Pope also drew attention to people who use the Press to write maliciously of the Church when he said: “I am convinced that the constant presence in the press of the sins of Catholic priests, especially in the US (and by extension, now in Ireland) is a planned campaign . . . the constant presence of these news items does not correspond to the objectivity of the information or to the statistical objectivity of the facts.” Irish Central editors please take note. They might write instead of the great job the vast majority of Catholic priests, nuns and lay people do in carrying out Christ’s commandments. Press people and posters like kickstar who do smear the overall goodness of the Church by concentrating on the sins of the few evil priests are not obeying Christ’s commandments. How about we Catholics inviting the people of the Press to change for the better, to stop concentrating on the scandals and belong to the true Christian Order than to the malicious Pecking Order?
intercessor’s post goes on with a load of suppositions. S/he asks for examples where the Pope showed outrage etc. In 2005 he said: “Should we not also think of how much Christ suffers in his own Church?... How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to Him...?” Addressing Irish Bishops from Ireland in 2006, the Pope said: “In... continuing efforts to deal effectively with this (clerical child abuse) problem, it is important to establish the truth of what happened in the past, to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent it occurring again, to ensure that the principles of justice are fully respected and, above all, to bring healing to the victims and to all those affected by these egregious crimes.” This Pope could not be more publicly clear on his intent to rid the Church of evil-doers. I await the results of this promise.
The meeting between the Bishops of Ireland and the Pope in Rome cannot be a damage-limiting exercise. There is already the most extreme damage done: some abused children have committed suicide. There can have been no less damage done to the Church and its teachings by evil perpetrating members of the Catholic Church. The Church of Rome now has a “one-strike” policy whereby priests who are found to have abused children even just once are removed from priesthood for life.
Regarding kickstar's comment...... I agree, it is "an attempt at damage control," and in my opinion, a rather lame one at that. As head of the CDF for at least 2 decades, if not close to 3, please show me one instance where Cardinal Ratzinger publicly registered his "Shame and Outrage," against the reports of Pedophile Priests from all around the world, which he could have papered the Vatican with! It wasn't until JPII was practically incapacitated in the last couple weeks of his life that Cardinal Ratzinger finally reopened the Father Maciel case, who had been protected for decades because he was a close personal friend of JPII. If you remember Fr. Maciel was the founder of the Legionaires of Christ. Finally, due to Cardinal Ratzinger's persistence, Fr. Maciel was "invited" into a life of prayer and repentance. Quite coincidentally this act of opening up the Maciel case was near to the death of Pope JPII and the election of the new Pope. Good timing! Just before the papal election Cardinal Ratzinger appears as a hero. As far as investingating the coverups that hit his desk as head of the CDR, could it be that his hands were tied by JPII and he was forced to participate in the coverups, just as the archbishops and bishops of Ireland were made to follow the mandates in Crimen Sollicitationes? If so, it's going to be hard for him to correct bishops and archbishops, who had the same hierarchical problem that he did as Head of the CDF! Think about it!
kickstar previously posted on IrishCentral that he is a committed bible Christian. He has exposed his hatred of the Catholic Church many times, just as below. All his Catholic Bashing comments show his form of Christianity is totally delusional. Will someone wake him up to this? Meanwhile, I'll reserve comment on the Irish Bishops' visit to Rome, and the promised Papal letter to us Irish Catholics until they happen.
The only reason this character is meeting the so called Irish bishops this weekend is an attempt at damage control or loss prevention..And yes I am being deliberately disrespectful.. As deliberate as this meeting is disingenuous. The abuse happened.. We all knew it was going on.. We covered it up and we got caught. Now how do we fix it up So as to get bums back in the pews and start collecting money again. Anyone who thinks that this exercise is anything more divine than this is being purposely delusional.
Ho-hum . The usual PR moves.
