Warning against diet pills released by Irish authority

The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) issued a warning this past Wednesday to consumers of diet pills containing the ingredient Sibutramine. Consumers were advised to destroy any of the slimming products they may have that has the ingredient and to stop taking it immediately.

CRI English reports that the ingredient Sibutramine was made illegal across the European Union in 2010 after it was linked to an increase in the risk for heart attack and stroke, as well as the interactions it may have with other medications a person is taking.

IMB compiled a list of 38 slimming products that contain the illegal ingredient, even though it may not be indicated on the pills’ labels. Further, the IMB believes that there may be “additional undeclared activite ingredient” in the pills.

Phenolphthalein, a laxative, was also found to be in two of the products. The laxative has “not been permitted in medicines for a number of years due to concerns over its potential to cause cancer.”

Other nations including the UK, the US, Australia, and the Hong Kong region have all issued similar warnings against Sibutramine.
