As the new decade dawned yesterday, blasphemy became a crime punishable by a fine of up to $36,000 in Ireland. An  organization called Atheist Ireland has immediately challenged the law by publishing 25 blasphemous statements made by famous figures on its website.

Speaking to Irishcentral, the chairperson of Atheist Ireland Michael Nugent said he didn't know how the government would react. "If they don't prosecute, it shows the law is irrelevant and should be repealed," he said. "If they do, we'll test the law."

Nugent said he is "baffled" by the government's decision to introduce the legislation at a time when there are so many other pressing issues to deal with regarding the relationship between church and state in Ireland.

The quotations on the Atheist Ireland website are from the likes of Reverend Ian Paisley, Conor Cruise O’Brien, Mark Twain and Jesus Christ himself.

The site quotes Paisley telling the Pope in 1988: “I denounce you as the Antichrist.”

According to the new law, Pope Benedict would also be guilty of blasphemy for a remark he made about Islam in 2004 quoting a 14th century Byzantine emperor:

“Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

Jesus Christ, in John 8:44, told the Jews: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.”

Perhaps most surprisingly, the very member of the Irish parliament who brought in the bill, Dermot Ahern, the Minister for Justice, appears on the list of blasphemers.

When he introduced the legislation in 2009 he joked about the critics who had made comments about him, saying, “They are blasphemous.” In response, another TD Deputy Pat Rabbitte jested: “Given the Minister’s self-image, it could very well be that we are blasphemin,”  to which Minister Ahern replied: “Deputy Rabbitte says that I am close to the baby Jesus, I am so pure.”

The minister has argued that he wanted to reform the law to make it agree with the Constitution, according to which blasphemy must be punishable by law.

Defending the legislation in the Irish Times last May, Ahern wrote, “blasphemy requires at least three elements to be present: that the material be grossly abusive or insulting in matters held sacred by a religion; that it must actually cause outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion; and, crucially, that there be an intent to cause such outrage.”

I would challenge everyone to research, read and rationally think through their beliefs. In this way, you can find your truth. The Roman Catholic Church has made some great contributions to civilization and humanity and made some horrific mistakes. I believe that we all deserve to have our views heard which is counter to this law. I don't think Christians should become as radical in their thinking as some Moslims have. Do we really want to fight the Crusades again?
I offer the following quote (slightly edited): “From time immemorial, this world has been troubled by plagues. Just now, we are facing one of our largest and least appealing infestations - we are beset by atheists. Worse, they are not traditional atheists; no, the new hobby atheist is as brash, noisy and confident as a cheap electric kettle. They want everyone to know that they have not found God, and that no one else should. Their particular target seems to be Catholics. On the surface, this is odd, as there are plenty of other religious targets just waiting to be saved from a vengeful, non-existent deity. But the Catholic Church has two incomparable advantages as an object of the wrath of proselytising atheists. First, it is the ‘biggie’. Taking out the Catholics is the equivalent of nuking the Pentagon. Guerrilla bands of non-Catholic (yet Christian believers') churches can be liquidated at leisure. Second, the Catholics have the undeniable advantage that they do still demonstrably believe in something. Attacking some of the more swinging Christian denominations might mean upsetting people who believe a good deal less than the average atheist.” >> So wrote a vice-chancellor of a Catholic University in Australia a few months ago. I think his words have a lot of truth in them. We Catholics (and other Christians) believe that denying the existence of God is blasphemy in itself. I suggest that the Irish atheists are launching this attack to save themselves from being sued. Doesn’t a cornered rat always attack first?
I make this quote, not as a hypocrite, but neutral in every way. The Bible teaches to pull the splinter out of your own eye before you try to pull the splinter out of someone else's.
. jamthecat."It's proven to be little more than a criminal organization out to protect itself at all costs so as to maintain its power, control and income.."Check out Almanac of Evil, all crimes involving the Roman church are listed.
I support the First Amendment to the US Constitution. Better to allow free speech and know than suppress it and wonder what they really think.
One person's critique is another person's blasphemy. I guess Ireland is back to being a Theocracy, where any criticism of anything any religion does is cause for prosecution. For being a well-educated, forward-thinking nation Ireland certainly is run by backwards thinking fools and demagogues. Y'know, I wonder how much the Catholic Church had to do with this. It's proven to be little more than a criminal organization out to protect itself at all costs so as to maintain its power, control and income...just like the Mafia and the Mexican drug lords. Wait -- does that count as blasphemy? Am I subject to prosecution now?
Blasphemy law, Arabic schools in Dublin....Pull off the blinders people, before they take over completely!!
I need hardly point out that systematic, ongoing child rape and abuse, and its covering up by the police and government for decades, is the REAL blasphemy.
Many of us know that kickstar, from his previous postings, is an ardent Christian - of the self-proclaimed, self-deciding type. I often have disagreements w/ him on IC but on his last one, I agree but only so far as it relates to Islam. Pandering to Islam is all this blasphemy law is about. The atheists and Catholic-bashers can have their say anytime, the Good Lord knows how to deal with them.
Kickstar, I have found it difficult sometimes to agree with your postings..This time however you've banged the nail on the head..Bravo..
I think it is always a sign that a Government has had power for too long when it starts to proclaim silly insulting or just downright repressive legislation, The people of Ireland never needed this type of law in the past even when British comedians told all manner of jokes about the Irish or when the likes of Dave Allen were making jokes about all aspects of the Catholic Religion. So why doesn't Ahern develop a Spine and state truly who this Legislation is designed to protect namely Islam.
The Catholic church un Ireland always had their bag men now its Bag Man Ahern, Anyone who could protect a church that ran Magdalene Laundries and perpetrated the disgusting crimes against children that the catholic church has done should be run out on a scaffold.
Apart from the fact that it is talibanesque in essence, in the light of the heinous crimes repeatedly perpetuated by employees of the Catholic church it is truly farcical to imagine this blasphemy law going into effect in Ireland.
