I do not understand Smyrnian's comment. Of course, this data refers only to NY people of Irish extraction. With regard to Stevenstar's comment, the information does not refer to people born in Ireland. Who would not understand that it refers to people of Irish heritage and ethnic background? Ethnically, people of Irish ethnic background number about 40 million people in the US - the second largest ethnic background in the US.
There have to be more Puerto Ricans that the 15K Australians in NYC. I was there for one of the yearly PR parades. Hillary even participated.
The definition of Irish, Italian, Greek, German etc. outside of their ancestral home is a very broad term. It does not mean they wee born in Ireland, Italy etc. it is an Ethnic affiliation title; that's all. Once that us understood may e the excitement will die down on this and other threads...
THE POPULATION OF IRELAND IS 4.3 MILLION PEOPLE AND YOU TELL ME 400,000 ARE GONE TO LIVE IN NEW YORK? NOW THATS A LOAD OF BALLONEY IF I EVER HEARD IT.. I HAVE A BIG EXTENDED FAMILY AND ANY ONE THE ONES WHO WENT ABROAD EITHER WENT TO ENGLAND, AUSRALIA, CANADA OR NEW ZEALAND AND NONE TO AMERICA SO MAYBE DO THE CALCULATIONS ON THAT AGAIN... :)
Something wrong with these figures. How about Indians and Chinese. You mean to say there is more Auzies in NY than Indians or all the other Asian groups
My interpretation also would say that the Irish are the fifth largest ethnic group in NYC
The tabulation is confusing. If Jews number 1.5 million , and Puerto Ricans 800,000 , then Italians, at 700,000, are 3rd, and Irish, at 400,000, are 5th.
According to Wikipedia, that would make NY the 3rd largest population center of Irish after Dublin and Belfast! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_settlements_on_the_island_of_Ireland_by_population
Those are only the ones who admit to it.
In the sixties, there were more Irish in New York than in Dublin and more Jews in New York than in Tel Aviv.
You must be disgusted Mr wounded knee, all those emigrants spoiling the view in your narrow-minded bigoted little world.
Irish are the third largest ethnic group in New York? And in a decade or two they'll be the third largest ethnic group in Ireland!
