An attempt at a boycott of masses in Ireland by parishioners angry over the church’s handling of women’s roles  failed on Sunday. The boycott had been supported by several organizations in the U.S. as well.

Churches reported normal attendance in all areas despite a call by  Jennifer Sleeman (81), from Clonakilty, Co Cork, to  protest at the Church's treatment of women.

Sleeman had said she wanted the  Irish church tp know "women are tired of being treated as second-class citizens" and called on Catholicto "join your sisters on Sunday, "Whatever change you long for, recognition, ordination, the end of celibacy, which is another means of keeping women out, join with your sisters and let the hierarchy know by your absence that the days of an exclusively male-dominated church are over."

However a survey by the Irish Times of several churches found all reporting normal attendance at mass,a fact borne out by outside observers.
Martin Long, Director of the Catholic Communications Office said the Church encouraged people not to absent themselves from Mass, no matter what their views.

"The celebration of the Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation is essential to the practice of the Catholic faith as the Sunday Eucharist is a pivotal aspect of the spiritual lives of Catholics."

Jennifer Sleeman was brave enough to wear her heart on her sleeve, and to leave herself open to carps and scoffs from the many right wing sexist misogonist dinosaurs that post regularly on the Irish Central Pages. Post, read and weep ladies. Even now the Irish Catholic Priests Association has put this issue right at the heart of their discussions. So Mrs Sleeman has fulfiled her role by "rocking the boat and upsetting the established order" You know, I seem to recall hearing stories of one who was also prepared to challenge conventional wisdom of the day. Oh yes, his name was Emmanuel!! Ring any bells Ladies!!
Say Dublinjas – did you hear what happened in the Garden of Eden after Adam had been living on his own for ages? Adam complains of his loneliness to God. So God says, "Okay, I'll make you a companion, a beautiful creature who'll cook and clean for you. It will be able to converse intelligently on any subject, and never ever complain or argue." Adam says, "That sounds great." God says, "The only thing is, it will cost you an arm and a leg." Adam says, "That's expensive!! What can I get for a rib?" (Apologies if it sounds sexist but ye can’t stop a chuckle.)
Mz. Sleeman, and any other women who take issue with the treatment of women in the Church, should read "Mulieris Dignitatem" (aka: The Dignity and Vocation of Motherhood or, as the Catholic women that I know that have read it, Authentic Feminism). This is a document written in '89 by JPII. It will make your hormones soar. This beautiful understanding of women and their role in the world is powerful. It calls for attention as it introduces theology that most lay persons have never before heard. It is about 100 articles long and can be downloaded and read on-line. Really. Google it, Ladies, you'll be so happy that you did.
Well said GeorgieD!
How did the "boycott" fare over here? I certainly saw no evidence of it. The media who promoted this farce need their asses kicked.
God created Man and then from part of man namely a Rib he created Woman, So according to that story Women were only an afterthought ..Something to comfort a man,Not supposed to be running the show or nag nag nagging, Anyway then Man created a RIB stuck two 250HP Mercury's on the back and scooted out too sea at 46 knots...No Bull.
Pregnant Women priests that's all we need
Yes, it stands to reason that men are God's preferred sex. There's nothing to see here, move along.
