Certainly Irish leaders are called on to comment on everything, but Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Brian Cowen probably took it a bit too far when he answered a question about “Jedward,” the Irish twins who are fancied to win “The X Factor,” Britain’s version of “American Idol” which also stars Simon Cowell as one of the judges.

Cowen wished the bizarre duo who have been burning up the tabloids the best of luck, but it seemed a silly thing to do given that John and Edward Grimes, a.k.a. Jedward, are quite possibly the worst contestants in the history of the show.

That has not stopped the tabloids from devouring them and a loyal fan base that has sprung up in their defense. Now the taoiseach is officially on the bandwagon.

Hmmm … there may be more important matters he has to deal with.
