Irish President Michael D. Higgins is in Boston this weekend leading the Famine commemoration and meeting Irish community leaders.

Higgins attended a ball for the Self Help Africa charity on Friday night in Boston and had earlier attended an Irish economic promotion luncheon.

Higgins is due to deliver the keynote lecture on the Irish Famine on Saturday morning at Faneuil Hall in Boston where he will also lay a wreath at the Famine Memorial nearby.

“We are greatly honoured and delighted that the president has chosen to come to Boston and lead the commemorations for the Great Irish Famine here in the capital of Irish America,” Consul General Michael Lonergan said on the consul’s website.

The Irish Famine memorial was unveiled in 1998 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Famine.

COPME HOME HIGGINS THE HOLIDAY IS OVER... MOST OF US DIDNT EVEN REALISE YOU WERE OVER THERE LAPPING UPTO AMERICANS WITH IDENTITY ISSUES.. COME HOME AND GIVE THE JOB TO A YOUNGER PERSON YOU SILLY MAN..
I agree with Brenn69 that there was no famine. How do you have a famine when your land has been confiscated by "you know who" and given to landlords who were shipping food to "you know who." That fact was recently on American TV, "Know your Roots" show.
I agree with Brenn69. How do you have a famine when your land has been confiscated and given to land"Lords" from "you know where" and plenty of food was being shipped out to "you know who." By the way "you know who" did the same thing to many of their own people." You should get the book "The Tin Ticket.
Umm, hello, there was no "famine" in Ireland, ever. And if the Prez. of Ireland keeps this lie alive, how are we to dispel it? There was plenty of meat, fish, grain...all of it, in 1840s Ireland; 'twas shipped out of Ireland under armed guard by, well, you know who. C'mon! Hunger, genocide, disease, homelessness, yes. Famine, certainly not.
He just earned his pay by raising a record amount of donations in the US from all the IRISH AMERICANS! Did you get that byethebut?
The waning days of Higgins' taxpayer-funded US junket. Plenty of work waiting for him to do in Ireland to earn his generous salary.
This guy is OK-set fund raising record,in spite of his detractors like byethebut!
