Too little, too late, to offer a personal apology to the abused souls who Brady and his so called 'fatherhood' interrogated. Those poor children were sworn to secrecy, after being raped and abused by the devil, what did Brady do?, what did the men of the church do? TURNED A BLIND EYE, let it go on. More children were allowed to suffer, shame on you. Be assured that this is not going to go away, your name will go down in history being associated with a pedophile cover-up. My prayers are not for you and yours, but for all the people that you have harmed!!!!!!

Cardinal Brady was well aware that the bishop has ultimate authority in his diocese even if the religious order is directly answerable to the Pope. He is the ultimate authority as bishop and even as a priest Fr. Brady should have inquired about the further actions that would take place especially a follow up about what was going to be done to stop or more importantly incriminate Fr. Smythe. As a cardinal Sean Brady has the gall to state that he had no authority over Fr. Smythe nor did the bishop. Such a statement is a cowardly act and a grossly incorrigible violation to his office as a catholic priest and an Irish citizen. He should have been contemplating the fate of Fr. Smythe in light of his horrendous danger to children. What is going to happen to this priest who abuses children? Cardinal Brady boldly admits that he neglected any follow up about the activity of Fr. Smythe. He simply passed the buck. He thinks that was a virtuous act and pleads innocence. No, he is guilty of formal cooperation of the moral evil of hiding the scandal of abuse. Where in this case can he claim any vote of confidence that he is a defender of justice and promoter of virtue?

Patrick Counihan, Ireland doesn't have a Deputy Prime Minister! Eamon Gilmore is the Tánaiste, not Deputy Prime Minister. Please use the correct titles for members of our Government. Thank you.

Brady should resign, shame on him, a man of God, who thinks he has done nothing wrong by not reporting the facts at the time to the PARENTS and POLICE, Brady was involved in the interviews of these children by the CHURCH, there parents were not there, the police were not there, who gave Brady and his fellow Priests the right do this in secrecy and get these children to swear they would not tell anyone!! They are as bad as the person who abused the children. He should not be 'asked' to resign, he should be 'sacked' and then prosecuted. The Vatican are 'protecting' there own, who protected those children. There is one thing for sure, Brady will have to answer to GOD one day, and so will the rest.

Fast forward to 2010 when he was criticised for demanding that two child victims swear secrecy. He could have "exposed" the Abbot. He didn't. He himself had to be exposed. Why in 1993 when Smyth was finally arrested did Archbishop Brady not come out and tell the truth about Smyth. He sidelined the moral imperative, stayed silent. and now he is reaping the result of his moral cowardice. This alone disqualifies him from leading any institution church or secular.

None of the comments below move the discussion on. Anger is understandable but causes the issue to be clouded over.
the point of my demand that the Cardinal resigns is simply :
He was a priest aged 36 in 1975 with a Doctorate in Divinity. He was part of an investigation team looking into Fr. Smyth, the paedophile. All members of that team knew what this monster had done and was doing (and as we know continued to do for years afterwards). The Cardinal's defence now is that he passed the report to his bishop and thence to Smyth's superior the Norbertine Abbot of Kilnacrott Abbey, who had the authority to deal with Smyth. In those days the Church (and many upper echelons in the State)believed that Canon Law trumped Civil Law,so their behaviour reflected this error???
NOW to the reason that I would want Cardinal Brady to resign.
He claims he was a mere note taker (my understanding is that he was a Notary a legal term within Canon Law). Even if I accepted his being a notetaker it does not remove the moral imperative to see to it that Smyth was stopped. Even if he was right to assume that the authorities would do the right thing I feel that he was morally obliged to check out that this had in effect been carried out.

hey bear, you cry over a million, the vatican are the biggest winners on the wall street market, they have investments in guns/military hardware/ hospitals/buildings,they are worth trillions on the market, so yes, if they hide their dirty pedophiles and shift them around to commit more vile acts, and eventually get caught, the victims are entitled to a little financial help to try and sort out their lives, but not the mental scars, were you in the priesthood.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. I am waiting for the usual Church apologists to come on here and post some excuse for this. Perhaps their leader Bill Donohue will have some sorry angry statement to make. This is all so sad. Sad for victims, their families and all who really try to make it right for the Church.
The apologists and sorry excuse makers...you can all burn in he**....

It's the same thing over and over. Those with the authority over these men don't care to exercise it. Those could use eminent domain and relieve those with the authority of their power don't care to exercise it. If the church authorities and the civil authorities don't care to help the people, the people need to help themselves to new authorities.

Sean Brady should resign and stop humiliating the Catholic Church. Not that it takes a lot these days. The buffoons in the Vatican (mostly men who have protected child-rapists throughout their career)should also line up for retirement.
