In commemoration of the 90th anniversary of Michael Collins’ death, the Irish Central Bank announced recently that it will be releasing a special €10 coin in Collins’ honor. Collins, the face of Irish independence at the time, died in 1922 during an ambush at Béal na mBláth.

The Irish Times reports that Jim Daly, TD for Cork South West (FG) said of the matter that “Michael Collins stands out as one of the greatest contributors to the setting up of this state as an independent republic and he gave his every waking hour to this country, eventually making the ultimate sacrifice by losing his life in the struggle for independence.”

“I am aware that there are many other significant anniversaries to be commemorated in the run-up to 2016,” continued Daly, “but Michael Collins made a particularly unique contribution that merits a special acknowledgement from the Irish State.”

The commemorative coin was confirmed by Minister for Finance Michael Noonan to Jim Daly, TD. The idea for the special coin came from the Béal na mBláth commemoration committe, whose chairman, Dermot Collins, “has warmly welcomed the Central Bank’s decision,” reports The Irish Times.

I forgot to add that the Anglophiles are still the gatekeeper of the media.
Here is an exercise for you. Everyone hold your breath until you get to view the Neil Jordon film "Michael Collins" on US commercial TV. Are you dead yet ?
"losing his life in the struggle for independence.” What a moron this Blueshirt TD is. Collins was killed fighting his fellow-Irishmen, this wasn't a struggle for independence. And looking at the video of the funeral I have to smile at the hypocrisy of the bevy of bishops and priests who attended. A year or two earlier they would have baying to excommunicate Collins, as they did with countless others, but when they saw the way the political wind was blowing in 1922 they fell in line and started to bellow their support for the Free State. I'm a Catholic, but I consider these people, to use the skunk Irish bishop's phrase "the feces of the church".
For some reason, I think a Bronze Medallion would be more appropriate then a coin. Of course, if it was a silver coin that would change things.
cool footage of the actual funeral!
