Irish Catholic Church unable to foot $1.84 billion abuse bill

Government vows to pursue every means possible to get the compensation

The Irish Minister for Education says that religious orders in the country found culpable in the sexual abuse of children are not able to pay their share of the compensation owed to victims.

The Irish Minister for Education, Ruari Quinn, says that religious orders in the country that have been found culpable in the sexual abuse of children are not able to pay their share of the compensation owed to victims.

However, he also went on to say that he is still going to pursue every means possible to get the compensation from them.

The total compensation package for victims of sexual abuse is some $1.84 billion dollars and the plan was for it to be split between Irish taxpayers and religious orders where abuse took place.

The Residential Institutions Redress Scheme is the authority that makes the awards to victims of abuse.

Its mission, according to its website, is to “make fair and reasonable awards to persons who, as children, were abused while resident in industrial schools, reformatories and other institutions subject to state regulation or inspection.”

There are 18 religious orders under the authority’s jurisdiction.

It now seems that the onus will be placed on the taxpayer to stump up more than the 50 percent originally planned.

Quinn is trying to get the orders to hand over deeds of schools and other property assets to redress the cash shortfall, but many of the properties are now owned by trusts and not directly by the orders.

“Please give us the title deeds of your educational infrastructure,” is what Quinn is asking of the religious orders in question, according to the Irish Independent.

"The property market has collapsed; the market value of capital assets has plummeted,” he added.

"Nobody wants to bankrupt the orders, who have made a positive contribution for generations to this country, for which this country is grateful, myself included."

Quinn wants the schools to continue to operate but wants ownership transferred to the government so that the orders can be seen to be doing as much as possible to pay their share.

"As there is a considerable shortfall to be overcome to realize the 50pc contribution towards the ultimate cost of the response to residential institution child abuse, I would request your congregation's views on how a sharing of the costs on a 50:50 basis will be realized."

The Cathlioc church needs to go away they have so polluted Christianity and misrepresented Christ's teachings. I cant belive the tax payer is on the hook for the immorality of the church.
Every archdiocese has an "Investment Portfoliio." Many of the portfolios include property that was willed to the Church in hope of furthering the Gospel, but instead, it's kept away from public view. Also many archdiocese have stocks and bonds. Can you imagine Jesus investing in the stock market instead of feeding and clothing the poor? The taxpayer shouldn't need to pay for the crimes committed by Pedophile Priests, when the Church has more than enough property to sell to pay her full share of the settlements. Also if taxpayers, end up buying Church properties, then, they'll end up paying taxes on the properties. Selling off Church properties sounds like a win-win situation for the taxpayer (though maybe not the Church) to me!
@allan: The "jockey(s)" RIDE the "ponies"... What I was just trying to point out was that the molestings at the Institution of Daingean in Co. Offaly (the most notorious in Ireland for the cruelty imposed... See childabusecommission. com) was for the majority part practiced by the stronger on the weaker inmate! With the most heinous part of that being The O.M.I. Brothers who ran the facility knew exactly who the perpetrator's (the jockies) and the victims were; but did not put a stop to it. And that is what was (is) in the DVD's I submitted to The Redress Board and Archbishop Martin.... They just didn't want to hear about or discuss the dirty truth.. Also; of the thousands of pages that are posted on the internet regarding The Ryan and/or Murphy investigation report.... They barley skim over these facts! I guess it's more popular to have stories written (as it is here on I.C) when "The Jockey" is a Priest or Brother.....
I agree with Von Liebonitz---the Vatican has to pay the "bill". It is worth a fortune, but don't tell the Irish people. Even fewer will show up on Sunday.
@McColgan1492 it now turns out that Gerry Adams Father was also abusing the children. So it is possible this illegal activity has been passed on within families. Sad but true. What is a "jockey" and what is a "pony"? People use these terms but as layman I dont know. Do you not find it wrong for Roman Catholic priests to be involved having sex with women as its against their church rules and therefore wrong. Immoral. How can you forgive others for their sins and break the rules and trust with your own employer, Church and God? Hardly honest behaviour from so called christians. Its a bit like being a Police Officer during the day and selling drugs at night. Immoral behaviour. Dishonest people who pretend to be religious.
The essence of real spirituality is non-institutional. To hell with all orthodoxies, Anglican, Eastern, Western etc. They are a diversion, detour and distraction from the real Jesus movement. The hierarchy of the Holy (sic) Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church is the old second temple Sanhedrin in sheeps clothing. Stop contributing your latter day second temple shekels to them and they'll go belly up. Then Christianity Inc. will become as materially bankrupt as it quite obviously is spiritually.
The Catholic Church is worth collectively around about 500 trillion euros. So are is the Crown and the Rothchilds. Why dont we have a mini revolution and seize their assets and distribute them to the countries they are currently in the process of bankrupting?

Celibacy leads to insanity, this rule is archaic, can't hold it against my man for breakin that one..We now have Altar Girls in NYC, and hopefully we will have Women and Married Men on the Altar Soon!.. Remember this, lack of religous tolerance leads to resentment and hate, and when you do this you are acting like the people you condemn........relax a little, your wound a little tight on this.... Why are you so focused on Adam's brother? Are you holding the sins of his brother against him? If that is the way you see it, we are all guilty of his sins....Liam is the guilty one who should be punished severly, leave it at that..
Ha,ha,ha what a laugh. The State should know it is dealing with the oldest corporate body in the world and one that knows all the loop holes in the law. Of course they "own" nothing but they sure reap all the rewards. How about putting a tax on church attendence? Walk inside a church, drop your euro into the government's tax box, once attendence drops I bet they find the money.
@Lilpaddy what is a "jockey" and a "pony"? Excuse me but this is so strange. Liam Adams (Gerry Adams brother) is in Norhern Ireland on charges of committing sexual acts on his own daughter. How crazy is that?
@McColgan1492 I understand what you have said. It is not a criminal act for a priest to go out with a woman. (Although it is breaking the rules of the Roman Catholic Church as all priests are supposed to take a vow of celibacy). The person whom blamed the US for the Roman Catholic Church allowing paedophile acts conducted by the RC in Ireland is misguided. He is certainly as you put it "Your man". I am not Roman Catholic and i would never support such illegal activities. He is but a fool. The Roman Catholic Church are not in touch with reality. Where abouts in the world are you? USA, Canada, Britain?
@allen7 I stated that the priest I knew goes out with adult women, and does quite well..... That i beleave is not a crime, you didn't undestand what i wrote. Your man however, stated that it was the Americas fault for molesters in ireland, which is ridiculous....
The Episcopal Church in the USA (ECUSA) also had a sexual abuse problem, but it dealt with the victims and resolved the problems with far greater efficiency than the RC and much less publicity. Two ways ECUSA reduced the suffering: 1) the Vestry of each church is made up of lay members who can be held individually financially responsible for harm done either by their priest and staff or by Vestry's failure to maintain buildings and grounds (liability for accidents), etc. ECUSA trains vestry members in relevant laws as well as polices and procedures. Believe it, those Vestry members keep a sharp out out and ask questions whenever they have any reason for concern. 2) The women whom the ECUSA has ordained since the 1970s, especially in those early years, included several who had law degrees and criminal court experience. They handled sexual abuse settlements and law cases and advised the Church on how to avoid more sexual abuse problems in the future. Ordaining those women probably saved ECUSA much anguish! And when the laity share responsibility and decision-making, they're not likely to tolerate abuses by clergy. Just two things to think about.
I guarantee an 80% reduction in claims of sexual assault; and a major increase in the $% the Church would have on hand to "pay-up", if ALL PARTIES (which includes The Redress Board, the Solicitors and Barristers who are supposedly protecting "the victims") if each and every one were required to take a polygraph!!! Oh, by the way, the molestings in Daingean (Co. Offaly) 1958 to 1960 were on a scale of at least 20to1 senior inmate on junior inmate. But the even worse part of that fact was that the staff (the O.M.I. Brothers) knew exactly who "the Jockies" and "the Ponies" were.... Proof of these facts were provided by me to The Oblates, The Redress Board and Archbishop Martin via a DVD I made from inside Daingean on August 31, and Sept. 1, 2010; which was just after telling The Redress Board (on Aug 30,10) to "stuff" their $ apology.. I am still considering using the DVD info in an expose documentary.... p.s. I was neither "a jockey" nor "a pony"..... but sadly many Dubs were... And mostly in the first catagory too!
