In an interview with NBC's "Today" and Irish Canadian woman described how her husband saved her and their unborn child before he was killed in a collision with an on-coming truck.
Erin Woods, broke down in tears as she described how her husband's selfless bravery saved her and their unborn child. She said "It breaks my heart and it also fills me with gratefulness…If it would have been a head-on crash, we both would have been killed and our baby."
On September 3 Brian Woods was pronounced dead at the scene of what would have been a head-on collision. At Whidbey Island in Washington State, a SUV careened across the centre line and over the roof of the Wood's family 2004 Suburban.
Brian slammed on the brakes and swerved hard to the right ensuring that he would take the brunt of the impact. His wife was in the passenger's seat pregnant with their first child, which is due in November.
Erin, from North Vancouver, B.C, had been dozing and woke to see the Chevy Blazer speeding towards their car. Amazingly she only suffered a minor bang to the head and their unborn child was unharmed.
"Physically, I'm doing pretty well…I'm not coping well. I don't think you can cope well in a situation like this," she told "Today".
The two backseat passengers in the Chevy Blazer were also killed in the crash.
Jordyn Weichert (20) the driver of the truck was, last week, charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault according to the Whidbey News Times. Local media also reported that heroin, cocaine, marijuana and a handgun had been found in the truck.
The driver, Weichert, had been taking off her sweater and has asked the front seat passenger to steer for her. She then lost control of the truck. The court is still deciding on charges against the passenger.
