The chairman of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (Boston) has appealed to Irish Americans in Massachusetts to contact Senator Scott Brown immediately to ask him to support comprehensive immigration reform.

Hugh Meehan was speaking after a conference call with Irish American leaders on Tuesday, where he emphasized the power in the Irish community, quoting past Irish successes in securing Donnelly, Morrison and Schumer visas.

"We now have a window of opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of not just the 50,000 undocumented Irish here who, through no fault of their own, have not been able to realize their full potential, or become full members of this great country.

"We now have an opportunity to address the terrible unfairness of the infamous 1965 immigration bill that has locked the Irish out,” he said.

Meehan said that of the 1.3 million green cards given this year Ireland only received 1,600, less than one-10th of one percent.

He pleaded with Irish Americans to ask Brown for his support on the Schumer/Graham Immigration reform initiative. "His D.C. #: is 1 202-224-4543," said Meehan.

"One phone call a day for two weeks will make a huge impact," he said.

"Have your friends and relations do the same and please don't wait for someone to make the call for you." "Please pick up the phone."

I support LEGAL IMMIGRATION, sorry if that offends anyone!
So whny the hell don't ye advocate the fixing of immigration law more often, like I have. I too went through the process it is classist due to the serious expense and impossible if you are not marrying an american. Fix the b.s then ye can criticise until then ye only come across as ignorant and misguided.
Absolutely rpmschevy. USCIS is what needs to be fixed. While they actually did a pretty good job of explaining everything we needed to do, for my wife to get here from Ireland cost over $2000, and we will have to plunk out an additional $600 next April to get her permanent residence card. My parents were not given the "easier line" plasticpaddy. My dad got a work visa the legal way and brought my mom over with him. They then worked to become citizens. I remember the time and money they put into achieving that goal. NO AMNESTY we had to pay to be legal, so should everyone else.
irishwxman I am with you. I have had to pay for my wife and my step-daughter to come here. I had to wait for almost 2 years to get through the bloody red tape, and we did things legally. Do it legally. If only 1600 Greencards went to Irish immigrants, then work on fixing USCIS, not on forking over more of our hard earn tax dollars to 20 million illegals.
Second hand I agree immigration reform for Ireland too.
There is no line American lassie because people can't get in legally. Depending on the ago of your parents and yourself irishwxman it is quite likely that the same opportunities afforded them are not afforded now. In the past 15 years the laws have gotten incredibly restrictive and led to increased 'illegal' immigration due to the lack of a fair and even existent legal mechanism.
I disagree with this article. Immigrants need to follow our laws. No cutting in line.
NO AMNESTY! My parents had to do it legally, my wife had to do it legally, and it cost a pretty penny. No amnesty! PERIOD!
No way! I had to do it legally. So they should have to do it legally! No free rides, except back to where they came from.
Nice one Hugh!!!
Why not Immigration Reform in Ireland so I can move there ?
Nonsense from mrkennedy about President Obama being responsible for the number of green cards going to the Irish. There is absolutely no basis for saying this. Give us your evidence/sources for this, mrkennedy, or stop posting your idle musings. This is straight Irish tea bagger crap. Put up or shut up!
I would like to see the Irish and all undocumented legalized but those who will benefit the most will be the hispanics and until the states where they are found the most, Texas and the southwest, are visited nothing will happen. The Irish, mainly located on the east coast, California and Chicago, are but a small component of this complex issue although probably better educated. People need to get real that the issue will be won or lost where hispanic concentrations are the strongest.
Blame the O'Bama administration for so few green cards issued to the Irish in the country! Could there be anti-irish feelings in his administration. Surprising since it is reported that he has Irish heritage in his family background.
Scott Brown is a DUD, a do nothing REPUKE!!! I know, I live here in Massachusaetts! He is a one time senator!
