Eric Poulos, the court appointed lawyer for the alleged cop-shooter Luis 'Baby' Ortiz told the press yesterday his client was beaten in police custody.

Poulos made the allegation at Ortiz's arraignment yesterday, claiming his client suffered bruising to his face and chipped a tooth.

'He was struck by police officers’ fists, both at the scene and at the station house hours after,' Poulos reportedly told the judge according to Gothamist.

In response to Poulos' claims the judge granted a request for medical attention for Ortiz, who pleaded not guilty.

'I think there is an effort here by the prosecution to sandbag this case. The videotape shows wrestling—it doesn't show who did the shooting. The gun was found outside in the projects,' Poulos added.

Ortiz was identified in three different lineups by eye witnesses, but Poulos claims these lineups were 'a set up' since police didn't allow Ortiz to change his clothing.

Meanwhile prosecutor Lewis Lieberman called the shooting 'an assassination attempt by this defendant against Police Officer Kevin Brennan.' Brennan survived the shooting.

Prosecutors told the press that local surveillance video shows Ortiz and Brennan scuffling at the Bushwick Houses on Tuesday night, during which the video shows the suspect loses a white sneaker.

Ortiz was shortly afterwards arrested wearing just one white sneaker matching the other one recovered at the scene. Investigators also claim that ballistic tests have determined the bullet recovered from Brennan's head matches a gun found outside the apartment where Ortiz was arrested.

If convicted Ortiz faces up to 40 years in prison. Meanwhile the .38-caliber revolver used to shoot Brennan has been identified as the same gun used in the New Year’s Day murder of drug dealer Shannon Mckenzie. (Ortiz was wanted for questioning in that murder.)

Regrettable, if not surprising. I empathise with the victim, but disagree with extra-judicial punishments, though appreciate NYPD cops probabl yfeel besieged and unsupported by Giovernment and community. Looking at the suspects photo, he strikes me as a very angry young man, probably from a disadvantaged background. Please handle with care.
Not too long ago a mutt like this would have been carried out of that project building with a sheet over his head. Thanks to forty plus years of coddling these subhumans, taxpayers will now have to room and board this bum for x amount of years or decades.Let's bring back the hot squat!
What is so glamorous about being in a gang that it makes somebody willing to go to the big house for 40 years to win "respect" from the gang? Can these people not think for themselves? Is this a failure of the US educational system, parenting, social services, or what?
that wise guy needS
that wise guy needED a whacking - good job i'm not a COP
He was lucky it was a cop he shot they protect guys like him now so they don’t get arrested themselves after the media and ACLU get finish showing how the poor underprivileged minority was mistreated by the PD. God be with the good old days after you shot a cop, you jumped of a roof or shot yourself as many times as needed to commit suicide. Or did you hear about the robber with the knife, after the store owner yelled stop thief he was grabbed by three marines he stabbed one of them then fell of the curb and broke both arms one ankle and two ribs. I hope them marines become cops.
Oh really, here's some money for the poor ,disturbed youth! NOT!
Nice coverage. Nice story. However, the media in most cases are complicit in crime to destabilize society. You know that the ACLU is watching closely and just how many priests have rushed down to make sure that his rights are protected. Meanwhile, Brennan is laying on a hospital bed worrying about his family.
Wudya go way outta that, he walked into the door of his cell.
and yes maybe they should have let him change his clothes - he couldve put on his pretty little dress that goes with his girly hair!! lmao
Seriously like anyone is going to believe that - we all know what happened - he tripped over his big fat ugly tongue and slipped and hit his head on the desk - what a silly careless lad he was!! There will be 50 cops will swear they were there and saw what happened so he should just suck it up and realize he's lucky thats all happened to him - wait till he goes behind bars - he'll be a heck of a lot more worried that chipping a tooth in the cop shop!!!
DITTO......Nelsonbarry
