Luis “Baby” Ortiz, a member of the Latin Kings gang, showed no remorse as he was led into court to face the charge of the attempted murder of Irish American NYPD plainclothes officer Kevin Brennan.
Ortiz is accused of shooting Brennan at point blank range in the head. If convicted, Ortiz will spend 40 years behind bars.
Miraculously Brennan is expected to survive his injury and is recovering at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
Patrolman’s Benefit Association (NBA) President Pat Lynch told the New York Post "He's doing very well. He's up and he's doing therapy, which is going to be extremely hard for him -- what type I don't know. He's surrounded by his family -- family coming in from all around. He's doing well for a very bad circumstance, he's a strong kid and doing well."

On Tuesday Ortiz was escorted from the 90th Precinct station house in Brooklyn, to be brought to the court house. As the press took his photo the 21-year-old accused said “Yeah, take a picture of me." He blew kisses at his friends and family and made faces at the cameras. In Spanish he shouted “I love the Latin Kings…You know what it is."
His supporters chased after the police car, as he was driven away. They threw plastic bottles and screaming “F**k the police”. His sister banged on the trunk of the car yelling “I hate f***ing cops”.
The New York Post reported that in court “score of cops” sat in the audience to support their injured fellow officer. The prosecutor Lewis Lieberman, from DA Charles Hynes' Assault on Police Officer Program, called the point blank range shooting of Officer Brennan “an evil act by and evil individual”.
Lieberman said Brennan is on morphine and in incredible pain as a result of the shooting. He said prosecutors plan to speak with him later this week.
Defense attorney Eric Poulos said there is no proof that his client was the gunman. He says the criminal complaint doesn't call Ortiz the gunman.
"There is no statement that my client fired the shot," he said.
Poulos complained that Ortiz had bruises to his face and a chipped tooth. He said his client was a victim of police brutality.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said surveillance video shows Brennan in a headlock, then being shot in an alcove and lying motionless as Ortiz fled. He called it "a miracle" that Brennan had survived the shooting.
Criminal Court Judge Charles Troia ordered that Ortiz be held without bail. Ortiz is due to return to court on Monday.
The accused has 14 prior arrests and is wanted for the murder Shannon McKinney, a drug addict known as Shan the Man.
Ortiz’s aunt told the New York Daily News “He's not the type of guy who goes around trying to kill anyone. He'd been arrested for drugs, street stuff but nothing like what the police are saying." However other residents in the area have a different opinion of the gang member who roams the neighborhood with a group referred to as “The Crew”.

Just for the record, I think all primary schools should be Gael scoileanna. This would help with cultural awareness in the same way that all primary schools in Wales are Welsh speaking.

Being Anti-immigrant is not the same as being pro-Irish. You did make some good points then. I cant remember what they were now but yeah they were actually well thought out but now youre just insulting and have no facts or figures for me. Id like if we left the EU and had control of our finances and borders but we dont and thats how its gonna be for some time but as someone who works in Maternity services and does a bit of work with the irish language and culture, it will only die out if Irish people continue as they are. You only have to look at a massive percentage of irish people who dont speak the Irish language and who are Americanised or Anglocised. THESE arent doing anything remotely culturally Irish. You need irish people to take an interest in Irish culture for the culture to thrive. Most of my Irish friends think Im mental when I tell them Im off to Tory or InisBofin or helping a mate out during filming of An G Team in Connemara or doing an irish language course. These are the people who will cause the death of irish culture no one else! There has been a massive resurgance of the language over the past few years. Some of this is due to irish people going 'Hmm my new mates have their own language and culture so maybe I should learn about mine' and migrants sending their kids to the local Gaelscoil.

Ah here Awoken! You dont like migrants in Ireland and you dont like Irish who have friends who arent irish. Why would I leave? Im from here and my family, friends and my job is here! People only tend to emigrate when they have to which is why people from rich countries dont tend to move abroad but those from poorer countries too! I NEVER voted for any of the current government and I NEVER will so why do you feel the need to bring them into this? Im guessing you have no non Irish friends? Do you even work with any non Irish people?You should blame globalisation for immigration into Ireland and Ireland didnt cause globalisation but it did benefit from it by its citizens being allowed to move and work abroad. You cant even answer my questions regarding what you do to preserve Irish culture. A few pints in the evenings wont cut it! We are in the EU therefore our borders are open. Im their driver when they fancy a trip to the Aran Islands or Inisbofin and they use the very basics when we are in the gaeltacht which is more than can be said for my irish mates! I suggerst you read some of the posts from Kinvara on the story of the latest citizenships. He has some very good information which may be of benefit to you. You just seem to see non 'Irish' faces and assume theyre here to ruin the place!

Migrants have brought to Ireland what irish migrants brought to the rest of the world! There is NO difference! I speak my language when I visit the gaeltacht which is at least once a month, I volunteer and partake in cultural events such as Seachtain na gaeilge and cultural events in my nephews school.I have brought my non-Irish friends to the odd ceili in Aras Cronain and CNG. I have introduced them to the irish language, history and culture. A couple of them have even got basic irish vocab books from Gael Linn. They respect it and have a great admiration for it. Again, what have you done?
