New figures released by the Irish Central Statistic Office showed that the Irish economy shrank by 7.6 percent and investment dropped by 37.9 percent between 2007 and 2009.

Fine Gael enterprise spokesperson, Richard Bruton, said these figures confirmed how badly Ireland had suffered during the recession.

He said “Ignoring price changes, the size of the Irish economy in Gross Domestic Product terms fell by 16 percent between 2007 and 2009.

“This is five times worse than the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average over this period and levels of domestic investment are now at levels last seen in 1997.”

Bruton continued by saying “Despite all the evidence and the conclusions of the recent banking reports, some Government ministers continue to pretend that Ireland’s problems were caused by outside forces, when the truth is that Ireland and its people have been the victims of catastrophic economic mismanagement.”

The figures show that personal spending fell by 11.1 percent in 2009. The Government also reduced its outgoings by 5.1 percent.

What the figures boiled down to is the Ireland’s Gross Domestic Product, the value of all goods and services in the economy, for that period contracted by 7.6 percent while Gross National Product was down a huge 10.7 percent.

Bruton said that this contraction in the economy sparked the massive jump in unemployment. The numbers of people signing on for social welfare, in 2009, increased by 97,000.

Wounded knee: The divide and conquer style of governing doesn't appeal to me. Ireland is a beautiful country and the Irish people are very kind snd friendly. They are the good ones. I prefer politicians who don't put themselves above the rank of their own people. That's all. I don't want to see Ireland lose it's unique heritage, either. I found out about Ireland's history about twenty years ago. Before that all I knew was what was in the news.
Searlit: "Who are the good guys then?" In Ireland? Are there any?
WoundedKnee: Who are the good guys then ? Not the ones who go around calling everyone else names, if they happen to disagree with their opinion.
Searlit: " Sinn is the only party that is taking the Irish people's side". Sorry, that's quite wrong. Sinn Fein supports an open door immigration policy. Indeed their leader Gerry Adams is on record as saying everyone is welcome to go live in Ireland. Other SF politicians are continually demanding immigrants' "rights" to colonize Ireland. A party which supported men and women who killed and were killed in the name of an independent Irish nation, now supports the liquidation of that historic nation thru uncontrolled settlement by foreigners. What an irony. Sinn Fein are hypocrites, they're in bed with the bosses and employers in Ireland who demanded the crazy Mass Immigration policy because they wanted an endless supply of cheap and docile labor. Sinn Fein are empty hypocrites to complain about emigration of Irish people, when they are to the forefront in supporting and cheerleading for immigration by foreign settlers. Sinn Fein are useless trash.
Sounds good killowen. For all the bad press they receive, Sinn is the only party that is taking the Irish people's side. I hope enough jobs are created to keep your own citizens from having to emigrate, further. Protest is good when the government forgets that it is the people, in a democracy, who are the government.
Kerry branch of Sinn taking part in nationwide day of protest The Kerry branch of We Ourselves is taking part in a nationwide day of action today aimed at putting pressure on the government to create jobs. At lunchtime, party members will be in Tralee, handing out leaflets about the effects of emigration. According to CSO figures published today, over sixteen thousand signed on Kerry's live register last month. Sinn Fein Councillor Toireasa Ferris says her party's message to the government is create jobs and stop emigration:

Wounded Knee: It must be what the corporations want then. First we had the corporatization of America, now Ireland seems to be following suit. I understand your feelings.
Searlit: A couple of points there. First, being in the EU did NOT oblige the government to import people from Poland, Latvia etc. They could have got a seven-year derogation, which is what the majority of European governments who are loyal to their own people did. Second, there is vast immigration now from outside the EU. If you go to downtown Dublin the place is full of Chinese, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans. All from outside the EU. Why are they being imported into a country that supposedly has no jobs? How come there are enough Chinese now to form a "Chinatown" in the north side of Dublin, when a decade ago there were just enough to run a few Chinese restaurants? How come an African guy boarded our plane when it arrived at Dublin Airport a few months back, to welcome us to Ireland? Is there no Irish person capable of getting on a plane and welcoming people to his/her country? If not then the Irish are truly imbeciles.
Whoa is you ... How about a tax cut?
Dosen't being in the EU require an 'open door' policy on European immigation?
The same Fianna Fail fools who caused this also gave Mass Immigration to Ireland. Long after the current recession is forgotten, the country will be struggling with the legacy of the demographic changes occasioned by importing a million foreigners, most of them in the child-bearing age group. Ireland as we have known it for generations is gone. Welcome to Nova Polskaya-Irlandya.
