I'll believe he is sincere when he shuts down his lobbying efforts against women's equality in health care, against equal civil rights for gays and lesbians, and against full criminal court access for the victims of sexual abuse. Caring about the community, including larger and larger groups beyond the individual and the family in our sense of "We Americans," is at the very core of Christian thinking, and the cardinal can't seem to do that kind of thinking until houses burn down and Nature, too long ignored and abused, begins to destroy the material word we depend on. We need collective action against global warming and collective action to achieve political and economic equal opportunity. Those projects, not his petty misogynist and homophobic campaigns, should be the work of Christians in this world. Until the cardinal realizes that, his voice will be the noise described in 1 Corinthians: "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."
