An overwhelming majority of Irish people believe that immigrants arriving in Ireland should be required to undergo a medical examination.

According to a poll in the Irish Independent, 76 percent of people said that in view of the tuberculosis outbreak in Cork last week, immigrants should be obliged to undergo an examination.

Said one respondent, "In Asia, during swine flu, they scanned all people arriving for temperatures, a simple, non-discriminatory practice, that put the public's health and safety first.”

Only 24 percent of those polled felt that screening would have limited, if any, impact.

Speaking of T.B. tests for immigrants, the immigration official at the port of arrival in the U.S. maticolously examined my chest r-ray to ensure that I didn't have T.B. Alll immigrants entering the country in those days were subjected to such scrutiny, and no one called an invasion of privacy.
I'm American and you know the problems we have with (illegal) immigrants. Also, TB has made a reappearance in this country and now bed bugs are everywhere. People should be checked for diseases, vermin and the like. When my grandmother came to the US from County Roscommon, she was checked at Ellis Island for TB. Diseases are rampant and people need to be checked. We have to protect our citizens.
I think people applying for citizenship should be required to have a physical, too.
If you are going to have a mandate that requires people to buy insurance then there should be a public option. Why should insurance CEO's be paid extravagant salaries, bonuses and stock options so that Americans can access health care? The President passed the best healthcare reform that he could against fervent opposition by Republicans and a few blue dog Democrats. At least, it makes care available to many people who weren't able to get it, before, especially chilren.
S7McCabe... I do agree that all persons applying for citizenship should be required to have a physical, however in the U.S. everyone "Has Been" paying for every uninsured person who rec'd care in the emergency rooms in America and Obama wants’ to "Stop" that practice requiring all persons to carry health care coverage similar to the requirement to be insured before being able to drive. So you will "not" have to pay for those uninsured.
We need another Ellis Island in Ireland to. Check for disease , if they are sick send them back to their country.
YES YES --- They CAN become financial drain on the health care system which is already in trouble plus they can spread infectious diseases.
I agree totally. You are paying for everyone's health care like Obama wants us to have. I don't like it. I sure don't want to pay for those who are not citizens' health care. TB is easy to be determined. Viruses are more difficult so you have to go by symptoms. Your population is still low, since the famine, and you need healthy people emigrating if you want anyone to emigrate. Of course you would have to take me. I am Irish enough to get my citizenship. Grandma was born in county Monaghan. Carrickmacross and I have the lace. If I could, I would come, rent a small flat, and go to Mass every morning. Please take me. I really would love to live in Ireland. I felt so at home. LOVE YOU PEOPLE!!!! Sheila McCabe Ryan
be careful what you wish for because when you come to the usa, they might ask the same of YOU!!! as you come and distroy Hotels in california > whats good for the goose is good for the gander, godda love the college travilers ??
Duh??
In response to etig1130's comment. Do you really know people who think it's okay that Mexicans enter the US illegally? I don't. Any person entering any country illegally is wrong and should be dealt with as the law allows. The point of the story is about public health, did you miss that?
Just plain old common sense. Whatever happened to it?
Agree! It used to be done at Ellis Island and can be done again.
Ireland has the laxest immigration and naturalization system (it's not a system, it's a shambles) in the world. Immigration policy has been decided by the bosses and wealthy, but it's the Irish poor who have picked up the tab. The rich took the profits of importing foreign labor, the poor paid the price, and will be paying it for the rest of their lives.
I agree with this for People from 3rd world countries. but not from countries like USA, England etc. But if this passes, should I get my rabies shots also the next time I travel from USA to Ireland? Should the USA, England and other civilized nations require Irish citizens to have a Medical exam when visiting our countries? This could became quite a mess.
