Equine welfare in Northern Ireland has reached crisis point according to a County Antrim horse sanctuary.

Thousands of stray horses are being left to fend for themselves according to the Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, which is being inundated with abandoned horses.

Across Ireland it is estimated there has been a 200 percent rise in the number of horses being mistreated since the downtown began.

Welfare groups have warned that animals are now being left to starve to death as their owners can no longer afford to feed and look after them.

Last week alone, three horse were found dead and almost 40 others were discovered living in appalling conditions, in a suspected animal cruelty case at a County Antrim farm.

Animal welfare experts have warned that up to 20,000 horses are abandoned across Ireland.

Legislation is due to be introduced next month which will aim at preventing unnecessary suffering to any animal.

Janice Watt from the Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, which is a voluntary organization, said the situation has reached crisis point.

“Equine welfare is in crisis in Northern Ireland, but the problem is multi-faceted,” she told the Belfast Telegraph.

Watt believes that the problem is over breeding.

“People are gathering more than they can afford to feed and these horses are then being abandoned,” she said.

“Slaughter is expensive and horses have to travel to Britain or across the border.

“There is an abattoir that takes horses one day a week, but there is an eight-week waiting list.

Therefore, some horses are being starved to death by their owners while waiting for slaughter, as they cannot afford to feed them.”

Last year, 9,790 horses were killed in them. Of these, the BBC has learnt that 4,618 were thoroughbreds.
why does this piece of so called journalism try to mislead people." There is an abattoir that takes horses one day a week, but there is an eight-week waiting list". please see bbc news of march 17th "Irish racehorses led to slaughter as recession bites"And abattoirs, where horses are slaughtered for their meat for human consumption, have become a growth industry. In 2008, there was just one in the Republic of Ireland, but today there are five. But this is not the whole picture. Figures are not available for the number of horses that have ended up in Ireland's 40 registered knacker's yards.PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT.
ciarrai..They are not wild animals, they can't survive on their own. People who treat pets like humans are not animal lovers. They hurt animals, because you can't put human values on any animal. I have seen so many people who claim to love their pet dog,but I wouldn't give them a goldfish to look after. There are many breeds of dogs that have physical and mental problems, because of the intense breeding. Some can't even walk properly, have serious heart problems or breath without difficulty. Those breeders are not animal lovers and neither are the people who buy them. I am far from carefree when it comes to animals. A suffering animal who nobody wants or hasn't a chance of getting a minder needs to be put to sleep as soon as possible. That is not been care free.
Sirpeter, someone out to put you to sleep. So carefree, "put them to sleep."
Look!! If nobody want's these horses the correct thing to do is put them to sleep. Maybe keep a few of them.No point in using up valuable resources, feeding them and vet bills, when most will be put to sleep anyway. On the spot heavy fine to dispose of the animal if found in bad condition.Treble it if they refuse and have to go to court.
THE owners should be starved put a fricken Ad in the paper & sell them Dah!!!!
This is rediculous!! With all the green pastures in Ireland, There should be some way to take the horses out to feed on grass! Especially this time of year. I would not send money. if they can't feed themselves, they are not going to use the money to feed the horses. Find a good organization that is honest and make sure the money goes for the right reason. I am so sick of animal abuse and neglect in this world. It's the same as child abuse. Neither can tell you whats going on.
Saw that on the news last night.Makes my blood boil.Did ye see the guy arrive at court? He's the spit of the cartoon character in George Orwells Animal Farm.
OMG That's horrible ! Is there any type of fund to help get them food ? I don't have much but would love to help a little.
