Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has intervened in the latest deadlock in Northern Ireland, it has been revealed.

Clinton spent a lengthy time on the phone with Sinn Fein leader and Deputy First Minster Martin McGuinness during the latest round of talks to try and resolve the policing and justice issues. Sources say her intervention has been “very helpful.”

Sinn Fein and its fellow governing party, the DUP have been locked in crisis talks over the past few days in a furious attempt to bring about a resolution of the policing and justice issue.

There are strong indications that the talks are starting to make progress and that the American intervention has been very useful in helping achieve that goal.

There are unconfirmed reports that the latest talks were called after a secret ballot by DUP parliamentary party members showed a large majority in favor of agreeing a solution to the policing and justice matter and continuing in government.

The talks continue against the backdrop of the scandal involving Iris Robinson, wife of former First Minister Peter Robinson, and her affair with a 19-year-old son of a now deceased close friend.

Robinson, who has stepped aside for six weeks, is back leading the talks from the unionist side. Insiders say a solution to the deal will involve a compromise on how controversial Orange parades will be handled.

Just a week ago it looked like the Northern Ireland government would collapse. Sinn Fein was due to hold an executive meeting that was expected to vote to pull out of the assembly.

Then came a major snowstorm that caused the meeting to be cancelled. Shortly after, the Robinson affair broke, which in a strange twist may even have focused the attention of the parties in securing a deal more than ever before.

beachline...I'm with you. The U.S.economy and foreign relations were far better off with the Clinton's even with their imperfections.
Now the talks are really doomed.....
Finger in a dyke effort - important to Saxon Empire tribe. A common heritage me thoin - bah! humbug. Planted ones, by Saxon occupier as against natives who were forced from their lands. Proddi folks now view themselves as Zionists. It'll be their way or the highway as they serve to maintain an important Saxon symbol need for an ancestry ie., harp representative of Ireland on crown flags/standard. The loss of an entity called Ireland would be akin to removing the hammer and sickle symbols from across the commonwealth. Worse than that the impacts across the usa, canada, australia, new zealand, falklands, so africa band such. An impact like this would diminish all who cleave to mother. The symbolic quadrant of UK countries that we may observe on buildings, medals, coins etc..... gone, left with a trinity of England, Wales and Scotland. This would be the effect were there ever an island of Ireland allowed to break free.
Anything that will bring Ireland together is a good thing. I do not understand Christisal's comment about the Clintons--their personal life has no bearing on this matter. Mrs. Clinton is an accomplished politician and mediator and I thank her for her efforts.
I can't find it on a map either, just the north of Ireland.
thank God for the clinton's and the key role they have played in bringing some measure of stability to northern Ireland.
The Clintons are disgraceful, horrible, arrogant people.
This is a stark contrast from the low key W Bush years, when no one even knew the name of the obscure official he'd appointed to the north. Possibly because the GOP couldn't find Northern Ireland on a map, then or now.
