President Barack Obama has now come under intense pressure from a key group within his own party to tackle immigration reform.

Congressman Luis Gutierrez, a long time Chicago colleague of Obama and leader of the Hispanic caucus on immigration, has demanded immediate action.

The Hispanic delegation - who represent the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. - are furious with the lack of movement on the key issue of immigration.

They point out that deportations are running at an all-time high under his presidency up by 13 percent from Dubya's reign to 298,401 in fiscal year 2009.
Gutierrez says he's ready to vote no on health if Obama doesn't do something on immigration.

"This is not easy," he says. "My office is covered with pictures of the president with me. We worked hard for his election. My wife adores him."

But Gutierrez says he is ready to work with the President if Obama decides to act on the issue.

"I'm very hopeful" that the president will agree to push for legislation, says Gutierrez. "The ball is in his court."

The stats  are cold comfort for Dems hoping to avoid the issue.

Obama turned out more than 2 million extra Latino voters in 2008 and they gave 67 percent of their vote which means that Obama could have lost key states like Florida, Nevada and Colorado without their help.

Hyattsville read you history do you love freedom or not and it was not just Bush the Demo-rats helped
I can't stand Obama and his fake wife. And to all the illegals Obama will betray you he just wants your votes and that is all. And we will vote the Demo-rats and the commie Obama out of office
He’s hardly a Socialist but anyway how bad would it be if he was? Perhaps Socialism is what it’ll take to right the wrongs of Autocrat Bush!
Obama is clearly a socialist and people voted for him because they wanted change and the Republicans failed to put up a viable candidate. MacLlyr is right that he is loosing support quickly. Just look at the popularity polls. If he doesn't start pushing Immigration reform quickly he will be a gonner in the next election. The Hispanic vote put him over the top in electoral votes in traditionally Republican states and they can and will quickly vote him out of office. That would be a good thing. Although, I would like to see immigratin reform this year and vote him out office for other reasons. We clearly need immigratin reform Now. Everyone reading this, please call your Congressman and Senator and ask them vote in favor of immigration reform.
Dyed in the wool Socialist at that. Check his record, not the side of his mouth he talked out of to get elected. His supporters are leaving in droves from what I'm hearing. When his cronies have to attempt end runs around Constitutional requirements to sneak in governmental power grabs, I can call it nothing but. Note that I have not used an ad hominem (ad feminem?) argument, but simply stated verifiable facts. By this point, he should be glad the Constitution doesn't allow for votes of confidence or recall elections.
MacLyr, if you genuinely think Obama's a socialist you shouldn't be allowed to vote: your diminished mental capacity should prevent it. It wasn't a "power grab," the American people voted for him in record numbers. They will again too. Because they support his policies. Deal with it.
Yay! Another vote against B.O.'s ill-conceived Socialist power grab. Shame it's for the wrong reasons, but right action is right action.
