Plans afoot to modernize Guinness’ St. James’s Gate

In welcome news for the Irish construction sector, Guinness manufacturer Diageo will reportedly apply for planning permission for a $130 million overhaul of its original and now iconic Saint James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin.

According to the Journal.ie, the plans will be submitted to Dublin City Council today to redevelop large areas of the Saint James’s Gate site (the home to the world famous black stuff since it was leased by Arthur Guinness for 9,000 years in 1759).

If and when plans are approved Diageo must then decide when work will commence.

But already the news has offered a symbolic victory to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, who claimed yesterday the announcement was welcome boost for the city and proof that it remains a competitive location for manufacturing.

'Despite the rise in the services sector a strong manufacturing sector remains crucial for the Irish economy,' Dublin Chamber chief executive Gina Quin said in a statement to the press.

'Diageo’s proposal to expand brewing facilities is good news for Dublin and demonstrates that ‘urban manufacturing’ is not an oxymoron.'
