The old advertising slogan ‘Guinness is good for you’ is actually true it seems.
While Diageo, the manufacturer, makes no health claims for the product, scientific research shows a pint of Guinness a day is actually good for your health.
Indeed it may work as well as a low dose of aspirin to prevent heart attacks.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin made the discovery recently.
The Wisconsin scientists gave Guinness to dogs who had narrowed arteries. They found the Guinness worked as well as aspirin in preventing clots forming.
The researchers told a convention of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida, that a pint of Guinness taken at meal time had the best impact.
They believe that antioxidant compounds in the Guinness are responsible for the health benefits because they decrease harmful cholesterol gathering on the artery walls.

When I had back pain such as muscle soreness. I drank a pint of Guinness and BAM! Muscle soreness went away in an hour. I'd stick with me Guinness as my medicine and a good time!!

LiamKeyes tells us that “Guinness supply every hospital in Dublin with "snipes" (small bottles" of Guinness) daily... They also supply the Maternity Hospital's, The National Maternity Hospital, The Coombe Hospital, The Rotunda Hospital etc. with the same gift (of Guinness)”. THAT EXPLAINS THE REAL REASONS FOR WHY THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE ON TROLLEYS IN THE A&E WAITING ROOMS OF IRISH HOSPITALS!!
Liamkeyes | Jan 19, 2011, 03:42 PM EST
There is an old Tradition in Dublin, Guinness' supply every hospital in Dublin with "snipes"(small bottles" of Guinness)daily. It is said to whet the appetite to which a lot of the patients concur. They also supply the Maternity Hospital's, The National Maternity Hospital, The Coombe, The Rotunda etc. with the same gift. Doctor Kaknes( a Greek Doctor) who delivered two of my kids) when he done his internship in the Rotunda. He said that the Guinness contained iron and he reccomended it all his patients. The Guinness' also host huge Christmas Parties for the poor people in Dublin. It is said that "The Guinness' are very kind to the people of Dublin but as Brendan Behan remarked "The People of Dublin are very good to the Guinness'.

The Scientist is correct! My eight siblings and I have a history of high cholesterol. When I used to drink that St. Louis Swill; Budweiser..My counts would hover at 600. Years ago,I started having the pints of the Dark drawn and my last report is 184. I think I'll have another.

Some people worry to much, and some people drink Guinness to much...And both will meet their maker to soon because of it.....But Guinness drinkers will arrive much happier ;)

I GAVE A PINT of Ginis to a girlfriend I once had. It opened her arteries alright but nothing could ever open her legs!....FIXED!!

My grandmother use to give us guinnes and milk as "a tonic" when we were very young. We loved it! She used to say it will "put hair on your chest". That's all well and good for my brother but not so much for me (when I was a 6yr old girl!) Anyway it never stopped me taking it, and no, I don't have hair on my chest! Also she used to dip a cotton ball in some hot whiskey for an earache. I miss her old ways!

My grandad had it medically prescribed a few years ago when he took a turn for the worse, gods honest truth. A friend smuggled it into hospital, and he improved. Friend was banned from the hospital and grandad got worse, another friend smuggled some in and he got better again, doctor gave up and prescribed him a pint a day. true story, he's now 90 years old and fit as a fiddle.

It's all coming down to my free weight training at the ripe young age of 76...a pint of the stuff an hour before working out...John L. Sullivan drank a case DURING his workout...Pints of Guinness antioxidant compounds in dogs is a waste of the good stuff...use human testers...

I GAVE A PINT of Ginis to a cur pup I once had. It opened its arteries alright but nothing could ever open it's mind!
Downunderyan | Jan 17, 2011, 05:28 AM EST
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service used to give a bottle of Guinness (optional) to blood donors as a 'pick-me-up' after donating their 'pint of blood' in the old days. That's how I got my first 'legal' alcoholic drink as a 16 year old first-time blood donor in 1968. The anti-alcohol lobby had that changed in the interests of discouraging alcoholism. Likewise with pregnant women as a tonic or under doctor's orders for people with stomach complaints.

Guinness also opens minds. US opposition to Obamacare drops to 30% as people actually learn the law and discount the right wyng propaganda.

Finally! Something good that has actually been proven to be good for you! What more could any Guinness fan ask for?

I am a bit anemic, too and pint of guinness really help me...but, back in my country I have not much places to drink my favourite stout.
seamusmoore | Jan 16, 2011, 03:10 PM EST
@paddyuno If you are a Yank, don't worry as the cost of your pint will be covered under ObamaCare. just be patient
zagloba | Jan 16, 2011, 02:21 PM EST
Good news on Guiness. One pint per day is wise. I personally am up to July 19, 2021.

It also helps you not to think, to relax, to silently bless all around you. The Dagda's own brew!

Diageo got to the Wisconsin scientists. What, Guinness doesn't sell enough already. I see enough Guinness signs when I go to Ireland. Please, don't start here.
donal1951 | Jan 16, 2011, 11:40 AM EST
I would not encourage anyone to drink, although I'm no teetotaler myself. But if one is to drink beer, I firmly believe, as my father taught me, "Guinness is good for you." Now it appears the able researchers at the University of Wisconsin agree with him. Of course, moderation in all things.
Paddyuno | Jan 16, 2011, 11:23 AM EST
My doctor says I am rather anemic and I told her Guinness was rich in iron and could I drink a pint a day. She said I could but she wouldn't write out a prescription and I find that at over £3 a pint its rather expensive.
Paddyuno | Jan 16, 2011, 11:21 AM EST
Good for nursing mothers too!
golfermike70 | Jan 16, 2011, 10:33 AM EST
I have been telling my friends - for YEARS - that Guinness is the healthiest beer to drink. Good to hear proof that it is good for my heart and high cholesterol!
1661996usmc | Jan 16, 2011, 10:08 AM EST
A much better reason to have my Guinness.
seamusmoore | Jan 16, 2011, 10:07 AM EST
A blood specialist at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore MD once told me he recommends that anemic patients drink ONE pint every day because it is rich in iron. Please note he said one, not a dozen.
oldboreen | Jan 16, 2011, 09:35 AM EST
Great news! Now we wait for other researchers to rubbish the findings-that seems to be the usual proceedure.
