Ireland has "absolutely failed its duty to God,” claims a website run by the notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.
Based in Topeka, Kansas, the God Hates Ireland website has been created by the fundamentalist group to “expose Ireland as the Emerald (now Pink) Isle of the Sodomite Damned, saturated with fags and dykes at every level of society and government.”
Founded by pastor Fred Phelps, one of the most-infamous former students of Bob Jones University, the independent Baptist Church has targeted Ireland via their website for permitting legal equality for gay people.
In the video on the website, young church members are pictured jumping up and down on the Irish flag and screaming obscenities about Ireland.
One young woman appears to be dancing an Irish jig on the flag, while another sings about spitting on it.
Phelps does not confine his harsh words to Ireland. God, he claims, hates the entire world, including his own country, the United States.
The Westboro church’s daily anti-gay protests are driven by Phelps' view that the United States is “a sodomite nation of flag-worshiping idolaters.”
But Phelps has a troubled past himself. Two of his sons, Mark and Nate, have alleged that their father is a child-abuser who repeatedly beat them with a leather strap and a mattock handle (similar to an axe handle) when they were boys.
The Westboro Baptist Church has also thanked God for the deaths of U.S. soldiers, and have picketed some funerals.
Since 1991, they have staged 41,226 demonstrations opposing gays and any person, group or nation they feel is remotely associated with them.

Portia777 | Jan 25, 2010, 09:16 AM EST
I see the patriarchal game of divide and rule is working well. Gay V Antigay. God V Aethiest. Christian V Muslim. All keeping the sheep busy, so they do see what their master controllers are doing to them.
Christisall | Jan 25, 2010, 08:34 AM EST
To olovely: you are so wrong. God has much to do with the economy. His wrath comes down on us in many different ways for turning our backs on Him and His Laws. He allows the awful things that happen because of this very reason. Money has become the god of so many now, instead of God being the focal point of our lives. It is through faith that we have any reason for living. . .without it we are nothing.
Christisall | Jan 25, 2010, 08:31 AM EST
Of course God loves gays; I believe He doesn't love what they do very much because it goes against nature, the nature God created. People need to leave other people alone and let God do the judging.
grimchieftain | Jan 25, 2010, 06:53 AM EST
Please don't judge Kansas by this guy and his brain-washed minions. Fred Phelps no more speaks for true Christians than does Osama Bin Laden. He's a complete nutjob and an embarrassment to Kansas and the Church.
Emeraldeyes | Jan 24, 2010, 01:19 PM EST
The guy is a complete bigot. Its unfortunate that he can influence people with his rants and especially young gullible people.
calirishvet | Jan 23, 2010, 03:59 PM EST
There is basically no one escaping Phelps wrath. He is an equal opportunity hater. He hates Americans,Irish,Jews,Roman Catholics,Episcopalians, and any other group who does not subscribe to his insane beliefs.
mikeoxlong | Jan 23, 2010, 01:01 PM EST
I think you are all mental patients. If god existed he would agree.
olovely | Jan 23, 2010, 11:24 AM EST
God has nothing to do with the nation's prosperity. Wall Street, the mega corporations and the big banks have fleeced the nation and this week the Supreme Court handed them the keys to the White House. God's AWOL. Religion is just a nice way they pull the wool over your eyes whilst they're picking your pocket.
MAGHNUS | Jan 23, 2010, 06:57 AM EST
Phelps is a child abuser; he's probably a fag himself....
MAGHNUS | Jan 23, 2010, 06:54 AM EST
How awesome would it be to have a law passed that stated that it were legal to shoot stupid people?
kilgara | Jan 23, 2010, 01:49 AM EST
The U.S.A. started its' rapid decline around the time it started to "legally' murder its' own children in the womb. Irelands' rapid decline started when it abandoned its traditions and became more and more like our decadent and decaying America. Ignoring God's laws is very costly.
kickstar | Jan 22, 2010, 10:27 PM EST
God is certainly pouring out his wrath at this time and Nations who knew a certain 'Well Being' and Prosperity have suddenly witnessed it disappear before their very eyes,Others who continue to worship evil will see nothing but their own destruction totally. Don't believe it?? Just watch this space.
JuanPablo | Jan 22, 2010, 10:21 PM EST
Let us all keep abreast of the News reports about this Westboro so-called "church". This group is obviously participating in a cult religion. Sadly those disillusioned folks will sooner or later be "Drinking The (poison-laced) Koolade".
irish53 | Jan 22, 2010, 09:35 PM EST
As an ex-Kansan I am totally embarrassed to have this bunch of idiot extremists tied to our state. They DO NOT represent what the rest of us feel or think. The God that I worship does not hate anyone.
455reload | Jan 22, 2010, 02:51 PM EST
MAY BE THAT PHELPS IS REALLY THE ANTI CHRIST,IT SURE APPEARS THAT HE HAS A FOLLOWING OF THE MISINFORMED ON HIS SIDE,AFTER IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE,WHO DO YOU WANT TO JUDGE YOU ? GOD OR PHELPS!!
RadCelt | Jan 22, 2010, 01:56 PM EST
Clearly these folks are supreme whack-jobs. What should concern us is how the media loves to put them on TV, Net and in print. I think they might just have faded away long ago if not for the attention paid to them.
Portia777 | Jan 22, 2010, 01:14 PM EST
Who is this "god" these people speak of? How do they know "god " hates the Irish? Another Inquisition brewing perhaps.?
jediwill | Jan 22, 2010, 01:14 PM EST
This guy is crazy...I'm a christian and I cant stand him or ANYONE like him.
beachline | Jan 22, 2010, 12:28 PM EST
Sounds like Fred Phelps has some serious mental health problems. Is this possibly another Jonestown in the making???
slainte9 | Jan 22, 2010, 12:12 PM EST
To call this a church is an exaggeration. Its membership consists almost entirely of the Rev and his children. Westboro is a neighborhood in Topeka, KS. Allegedly, the the "church's" baptismal font is the pool in the Rev's backyard. Virtually, everything the Rev does is intended to attract attention. Some years back he asked to march in the Topeka St. Patrick's Day parade. He was told: "Of course, everyone's welcome. But no signs and no politics. The same thing that was told to Al Gore when he visited a years earlier." Put off by this the Rev stood on a corner with his graphic, vile anti-gay signs and watched the Irish march by. When one float with a clan of Irish pulled up to him, the riders turned their backs, bent over, pulled down their pants and gave the Rev the Irish salute a la Brave Heart. The Rev infuriated screamed at a nearby policeman: "Did you see that?!!!" What? I didn't see at thing replied the police officer.
Nearly Normal | Jan 22, 2010, 11:32 AM EST
Pathetic, so pathetic. In our state, there are men who go military funterals to shield families from these picketers so the pickets don't disrupt while their child is buried. Now they don't show up because they don't get the attention they want.
Nearly Normal | Jan 22, 2010, 10:30 AM EST
Ah Christians, you can't live with em, can't shoot em. An interesting coincidence about Christians is their god hates the same things they do.
michaelvona | Jan 22, 2010, 10:25 AM EST
These are sick people.
killowen | Jan 22, 2010, 10:07 AM EST
G-d told 'em. Another wave of prophets coming onstream. Don't you love it - the insanity that out and about. Wish they would've told g-d to save those hundreds of thousands that we see on the tele - SEND A DONATION. TX.
LouGuyt | Jan 22, 2010, 09:49 AM EST
Since God is Love, he does not "hate" anyone. He may be unhappy or disappointed with some of his children, but hate is not a prt of His nature. He may be disappointed with Ireland because they gave in to Rome about the 8th century, and he is certainly unhappy with anyone who preaches "Hate!"
ripley838 | Jan 22, 2010, 09:40 AM EST
Rev. Phelps hopes to grow up to be Rev Paisley. Someone should ask his chidren if they were victims of sexual abuse as children.
mandokeith | Jan 22, 2010, 09:16 AM EST
God does not hate anything except sin.He loves the sinner and hates the sin. o loved the world that He gave His only son to die for those sins. Now much of the world has turned it's back on Him. The haters in Kansas are wrong to act like they do, but so are the people of Ireland, America, and everywhere else, who have turned their backs on God and gone their own way.
ganjadec | Jan 22, 2010, 09:13 AM EST
Hate only hurts when it comes from someone who actually matters. These Christian Fundamentalist Extremist idiots do not matter, so who gives a rat's ass what they think? I am surprised they find time with all the sex-with-family-members, inbreeding et al they get up to.
Titusxx | Jan 22, 2010, 09:06 AM EST
If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." — 1 John 4:20-21 (NIV)
Haole3000 | Jan 22, 2010, 08:55 AM EST
Iam sure the American flag has been stepped on more in Ireland. Irish news papers are full on Anti American hate. Most Irish think European Nazis or communists would have done a better job as world leaders then the USA. Oh yeah, except Bush is Hitler.
sully1167 | Jan 22, 2010, 06:39 AM EST
Ignore these ignorant, self rightous, inbreds.Fred Phelps is probably a closet, self hating homosexual himself. I am not saying there is anything wrong with homosexuality,I am just comparing Fred Phelps with Ted Haggard. A hypocrite.
Meggie01 | Jan 21, 2010, 07:06 PM EST
To be hated by this stupid bunch of people places the Irish in some fine company. Far worse would be to have these hideous people approve of you.
Madeleine | Jan 21, 2010, 06:44 PM EST
They sound like mental deficients and nothing more. They are horrible people who are not worth worrying about. Why Ireland though? I should think SanFranciso or NYC and the USA, why Ireland?
SkeeterVT | Jan 21, 2010, 05:22 PM EST
From the American side of the Atlantic, I can tell you that the Westboro Baptist Church is neither Baptist nor a church. It is, in fact, a CULT, whose membership is made up EXCLUSIVELY of relatives and in-laws of its iron-fisted leader, Fred Phelps. What you might NOT know, however, is that the Phelps clan has a long record of running afoul of that law -- and that Fred Phelps has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as physical abuse of his wife and children. You can read who whole sordid story of this cult at the URL below: http://www.skeeterbitesreport.com/2009/08/anti-gay-westboro-cult-hatemongers.html
IrishAndProud | Jan 21, 2010, 04:07 PM EST
These people have been doing these things for years. You've just NOW discovered them? I wouldn't even give them a moment of my time. I don't know why you waste yours.
hyattsville | Jan 21, 2010, 04:02 PM EST
These twits are just ridiculous but it does make me angry to see them picket the funerals of young dead soldiers. It is just so disrespectful to the deceased and the families who mourn them, and has absolutely nothing to do with their homophobic rants anyway. They spend $250,000 a year on picketing, a damned sight more on law suits, and nothing on anything positive or constructive. Worthless, hateful saps.
rwsandersii | Jan 21, 2010, 03:09 PM EST
If anyone over there wants to visit so they can see the church let me know and my wife and I will put you up. We'd hate to have anyone over there think we're all nuts over here. If you don't take them seriously, they are actually quite funny. That level of obsession means only one thing...don't tell anyone, but Fred's gay.
Fionnuisce | Jan 21, 2010, 12:25 PM EST
Westboro Baptist Church you are a bunch of despicable hypocrites.
irishathens | Jan 21, 2010, 12:06 PM EST
And I thought the Taliban were bad. May God help us all
divilment | Jan 21, 2010, 11:47 AM EST
When Westboro Baptist Church is mad at you, you know you must be doing something right!
Padraig | Jan 21, 2010, 08:48 AM EST
the founder went to Bob Jones University, the one in Greenville, SC? If so, that explains everything. Just Google Bob Jones, cretin is too good a name for that Imbecile. He was morally and intellectually bankrupt. More a cult leader than anything else, drink the cool aid folks, drink up you chosen few Baptist.
deenaww | Jan 21, 2010, 08:37 AM EST
wow...I thought Christianity was about tolerance, understanding and forgiveness.
MeganFinnegan | Jan 21, 2010, 08:36 AM EST
I'm sure that people spending their time pulling ridiculous stunts like this is exactly what God has in mind for us all. The only response to these people is to ignore them, because there is no reasoning with them.
teecee3467 | Jan 21, 2010, 08:31 AM EST
What a world of nuts and flakes we live in.
