USPGA leader Rory McIlroy has revealed how his break-up with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has rocketed him back to the top of the world rankings.
As he takes a one shot lead into the final round of the USPGA Championship at Valhalla, three time major winner McIlroy has confirmed that the end of his relationship has refocused his mind to golf.
The 26-year-old Ulsterman famously dumped his Danish fiancé earlier this summer.
Since then he has won the British Open and two other titles and is leader going into the fourth round of the final major of the season.
McIlroy revealed in Louisville that golf is now his ‘life’ after he called off his engagement in May.
He admitted to the BBC: “After that, I just immersed myself in my game. I’ve practised hard and I’m reaping the rewards.
“It’s hard to really say how much I practise now. I guess, what else do I have to do?
“I get up in the morning, I go to the golf course, I go to the gym.
“It obviously works pretty well, so I’m going to keep doing it. It’s my life at the minute.
“I always feel like I’ve practised pretty hard. Over the past couple of months, I’ve really buried myself in my golf game.”
McIlroy, on 13 under, is one shot clear of Austrian Bernd Wiesberger going into the final day at Valhalla with Rickie Fowler two shots adrift.
Phil Mickelson and Jason Day are 10 under, with four players on nine under.
McIlroy said after his third round: “It’s not the biggest lead I’ve ever had but I am still in control of this tournament.
“It’s the best place to be in a tournament. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
