A Galway photographer believes he took a photo of a 19th century Claddagh nun at the Long Walk, industrial estate.
According to reports in the Galway Independent, Jonathan Curran was “freaked.” He took 12 other pictures and the ghost nun did not appear.
He said, “The image was not visible either before or after the photograph was taken and was not captured in any of the other photographs, either going or coming. She just seemed to appear for a moment and then disappear. There were other people on the Long Walk that day, but they seemed oblivious to her presence.”
Locals in Galway are now trying to distinguish whether this image is the real deal – is it a ghost or an optical illusion?

William Henry, a local historian said there have been many haunting around the Claddagh, Wolfe Tone Bridge and the Long Walk. These stories include tales of “The Lady in White”.
He said “An elderly man once described seeing a lady dressed in medieval clothing near the bridge one night, long before our festivals began. Other stories of hauntings were told in the old Claddagh and many young people were warned to avoid Wolf Tone Bridge after mid-night. This had the added advantage of ensuring that they were home before 12 bells.”
He called the image in question striking and said it “certainly stands out as clearly out of place in a modern context.”
“She appears to be looking directly at the camera indicating an awareness of her surroundings.”

Just one question... if it's a black navagation marker then why didn't it appear in shots taken before and after this one? Not saying I believe it's a ghost, but if the reality were as simple as the one offered it would show up in other photos as well.

Black navigation marker. It appears to be further away because the left side coincides with the edges of the boulders.

Looks more like a woman in the typical long black cloaks of the 19th century - why does he say it is a nun? Is there a story behind it?

Interesting stuff ! But I wouldn't know a ghost if I met one.

You never know. My parents wanted to leave all the "superstitions" behind when they left Ireland. But I finally got the story of how my science-educated uncle finally asked the priest haunting the village church what he wanted. The priest was recognized as a priest who had died while serving that parish. Through sign language my uncle understood that the priest wanted to say Mass but needed a Mass server. So my uncle served his Mass in front of the congregation. The priest was never seen again. Or so the story goes, from people who did NOT want that story to follow them to the US.

I am quite certain that I know this woman. She is the spitting image of my great grandmother who went to visit some relatives in Galway on May the 5th 1873 and never came home. Evidently she has been hanging around the Long Walk all this time. Poor soul, she must have misinterpreted the meaning of the long walk.
