Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams says his father was a sex abuser, and that family members who were abused are still recovering from the trauma.

He says he only found out about it 11 years ago when he was 50. The revelations come amid a police search for his brother Liam, who is wanted for abusing his own daughter.

Adams' father, Gerry Sr., was a member of the IRA who served time for shooting a policeman. He was one of the founders of the Provisional IRA and a defining influence on his son.

Adams said his father's abuse had traumatized his family.

"This discovery and the abuse which preceded it have had a devastating impact on our entire family," he said.

"We live with the consequences every single day. "Our family has debated for some time whether we should publicisz our father's abusive behaviour," he added.

"We do so now in the hope that, in time, this will assist the victims and survivors to come to terms with what happened and help them to move on from these dreadful events."

Adams was speaking in an interview with Irish broadcaster RTE on Sunday. He said he did not recall being a victim.

“It obviously tests your faith in humanity when an iconic figure like my father engages in the psychological and emotional and physical and sexual abuse of a child, of his child, but with attention, with understanding, with resolve, and with love we can find our way through all of this.”

His father received a Republican hero's funeral and the coffin was draped in the Tricolor, something Adams now says was against his own wishes.

“That was one of the great dilemmas for me because I didn’t want him buried with the Tricolor. I think he besmirched it.”  He said the family did so for privacy reasons.

“So you have to look after the living as opposed to the dead,” he said.

The Sinn Fein president said his father was in denial about the abuse and "had died a lonely old man.

"I have pondered on this and brought myself back to the family home where the abuse took place.

"I tried to come back into childhood, back to bedrooms, back to other places where I know the abuse took place, and I cannot find any recollection of being personally abused.

"At the same time I am very mindful that sometimes flashbacks are caused by a smell, by a curtain, by a song, by some very mundane everyday event. But as I sit here, I do not have any recollection of abuse."

“I myself for a long time wanted this to be publicized because there is a culture of concealment, but we can only do this when everybody is strong enough."

On Friday, Adams called on his brother Liam to give himself up to police to answer allegations of sexual abuse.

not for obvious reasons, you still have yet to give a single good reason why he should resign, state it, don't just say its obvious
Also the political party I am a member of, all elected officials live on the industrial wage and donate the rest of their salaries to the furtherance of the goals of the party - Sinn Fein
yes, you are right, I am a leftist in a capitalist country and I try to do what I can to help people and be a good person. Is that a bad thing?
ok, here it goes, the british wanted peace in northern ireland, why is that? because the IRA took a campaign to the british mainland forcing the british government to act to remove the threat of violence to its own people who finally began to care about the northern irish question
To plasticpaddy! One:I wholeheartely condemn any sort of child abuse, I can't personally understand how anybody would even think of harming a child let alone harm a child.TWO: You work for a government which was the most successful commercial capitalist country in history and then you try to claim you are a communist. So it seems like your a living contradiction of your own claimed beliefs. THREE:You then attack the Catholic Church which in spite of its terrible sins has done more good for Ireland and the world than any organization in history.(For instance how many life long vows of poverty have you or your friends took?) FOUR:A simple question even for a communist and the pack of easily led Irish media thinkers, and the question is this-Why would the British (according to Niall O Dowd and other people) be so opposed to a visa for Gerry Adams to America when the British wanted peace in Northern Ireland as much as anybody else? And keep in mind the British are masters of global media stagecraft! Final note: Previously I wrote Adams shouldn't resign but in the light of this new information, for obvious reasons I stand by my statement.
Ahhh now Vincent give one good reason why he should resign? He wouldnt send victims of child abuse to another set of abusers who would have used them to put innocent men behind bars. Is that the peoblem you have? I'm just trying to understand your reasoning, it doesnt make any sense to me.
Adams didn't know till eleven years ago? and the British didn't know I suppose! Time for Adams to resign!
Agreed kickstar
As if any further evidence was ever needed as to how Courageous a man Gerry Adams is. To come forward and reveal that you have been sexually abused takes courage to reveal that your Father was a sexual abuser takes Spinal Fortitude.
And apparently pestered the mother too being as he fathered 13 with her. I read that he was commonly known as 'the dirty wee man' so obviously his perversions were well known yet unfortunately nobody bothered to protect the children. Ireland has a horrible history of child abuse, active and passive.
Well not surprised Terrorists are generally Evil,The sooner power is taken from them the better for the world and our planet becomes a better place. The Gildenews dissappear.Who knows one day Northern Ireland could reach 2nd world status. smarock10@yahoo.com
this is probably an ongoing ting within societies holding or forced into contradictory belief modes. Three our fathers and two hail mary's should cover this one. LOL
Every nation in the world is a nation of Child Abusers! In the US alone 3 out of every 5 girls are sexually abused and 2 out of every 5 boys are abused. This sickness permeates our world, devastates our children and kills their spirits. Not to mention, often killing them in the process. Good on Gerry Adams for coming out with it. He will be a healer for his family and my prayers are with him and his.
Every nation is a nation of child abusers. Abusers are everywhere destroying the lives and killing the spirits of children all over the world. And even if Gerry himself was not abused, he will be dealing with the abuse for the rest of his life as he works along side his siblings that were. It goes with the territory with the territory. Good on him for having the courage to come out with it.
It would be easier to list who in Ireland has NOT!!! been abused in the current climate
