Gay Byrne will not run for President of Ireland and will formally withdraw from the race to succeed Mary McAleese on Wednesday.

That’s the view of close friends of the Irish broadcasting legend who has topped the opinion polls in the Presidential election campaign.

The Irish Independent quotes close and personal friends of Byrne in its story that the 77-year-old will not seek the highest office in the land.

The associates have told the paper that Byrne has already made up his mind not to run but will only confirm it after a family conference when his daughter returns from France on Monday.

Close friends are adamant that the broadcaster will not allow his name to go forward despite huge support from the public.

“I believe he has made up his mind not to run but he has been astonished by the reaction of the public and the media,” one close friend told the Irish Independent.

Another source close to Byrne said: “I told Gay he would be better served by ending the speculation before the weekend. I believe he has made up his mind not to run but he has been astonished by the reaction of the public and the media.”

Another friend said: “If this goes on through the weekend and into next week, a lot of people will be very disappointed if Gay decides not to be a candidate.

“Gay has been around long enough to know that the media will turn against him if they feel he has led them on and then let them down.”

Currently relaxing at his Donegal holiday home, Byrne has confirmed that he will issuing a statement on Wednesday after he consults his daughter.

“I am not making any decision until I talk to her about it,” said Byrne.“I will make the announcement when I make the announcement.

“My daughter is not back from France until Monday. These are matters that need to be discussed with my family. I will not be putting out a statement until Wednesday. I am on my way up to Donegal until then.

“Again and again, I am being told there is no rush on me. Everybody is on holiday. Micheal Martin is on holiday. All of Fianna Fail are on holiday.

“Anybody who has anything to do with this, apart from the media, is on holiday. So I don’t have to make up my mind.”

Byrne cited the Mary McAleese example as proof that there is no rush on him to make a decision.

He added: “Mary McAleese declared seven weeks before the election and she is the President. Seven weeks in this case is in the middle of September and we are only just in the middle of August.

“Yes, I am still considering it and the only people who are pushing me are the newspapers.”

The whispering gossip news is apparently faster than Gaybo in making public the news that he’s not running down the Hill of Howth (not surprising; he don’t live there anymore, I hear) for the upfields of Ass na Hairing. If Gaybo’s name were to appear on the Presedential election sheet I would not be ticking it – the guy’s too old (77 yrs of age) to take up the 7-yr long cudgel for the now-established (after Mary Rob and Mary Mac) importance and impact of the office of the Irish President. Anyway, imho, Gaybo doesn’t have the legal or political nuance necessary to execute the functions of the office. #There were two gays in the bed and the little one said ‘Move over, move over’. So they all moved over and one fell out ... *dump dump*... arseways. Then another Gay jumped in and the little one said ‘Move over, move over!’ So they all moved over and Gaybo fell out... # (complete the song as you’d like)...
don no why am thankin god/as don believe in him anymore either, but thank god that little smugness has pulled out, never know guys maybe he read our blogs!ha ha.towngate couldn have put it better myself.
The saints preserve us from this dreadful prospect. Will Byrne as President make the country wait on the availability of his family members in order to arrive at any decisions! He should forget all about it. He's had a fair run in the sun - talentlessly sneering at the talents of others and spouting unqualified opinions all over the place. Time for him to hide up on the Hill of Howth ~ or better still; stay in Donegal ... This parasitic clown will be a disaster for Irish Statesmanship internationally and within (EU) Europe in particular; ~ making us an even bigger laughing stock. ~ And you can bet Byrne himself will be laughing last, loudest and longest ~ behind his sleeve, of course!
Huge support from the public, get a life, its his rich mates in the government who pull the strings, then propaganda with the media makes the people think they should vote for him. I think the public have learned a hard lesson by the vote.
Apparently one village idiot does not want the job ,and the other who vary much did got forced out of running for being too good a village idiot!
The job is largely ceremonial. The President of Ireland signs the commissions of Officers in the Army, Navy and Air Corps, receives the papers from Ambassadors who have an Embassy in Dublin, ohhhh yes, attends both Hurling and Football finals in Croker and presents the Trophy to the victorious team. It's not an exact science, in fact, the village idiot could do the job.
This so called presidential election has gone from farce to laughing stock. Can it sink any lower?
