An unusual love story of an astronaut and a congresswoman
Kelly, 46, has flown on the shuttle three times since joining NASA in 1996 and April would be his fourth flight.
He was selected by NASA for the astronaut program in April 1996 and reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996.
He was the pilot on shuttle flights in 2001 and 2006 and was named the shuttle commander for a 2008 mission. Overall he has logged 388 days in space, one of the longest of any serving astronaut in American history.
His final flight is set to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer a state-of-the-art cosmic ray particle physics detector designed to examine fundamental issues about matter and the origin and structure of the universe.
Prior to joining NASA, Kelly graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in June 1986 and was designated a Naval Aviator in December 1987. He flew 39 combat mission in operation Desert Storm. He was a naval pilot instructor when selected for the astronaut program in Texas.
Now as he keeps vigil by his wife's bedside on his toughest mission yet he knows the prayers of a nation are with him.
