The French have made fresh vows to veto any plans to cut the interest rate charged for Ireland’s bail-out by the European Union and the IMF.

The government in France has again said that it will only agree to an interest rate cut if Irish corporation tax rates are increased.

Irish government sources have confirmed to the Irish Examiner that: “The French are digging in. They will use their veto.”

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has reacted to the latest threats by telling the French that he will not budge on Ireland’s 12.5 per cent corporation tax rate.

Noonan has pointed out to the French that the corporation tax rate is responsible for Ireland’s export-led growth. As a result, he is willing to forego the saving on interest repayments of between €148 million and €200m a year.

“I will not be waltzed around by any member state, especially when the gain is so small in contrast to the potential industrial promotion,” Noonan told the Irish parliament.

“The value of the reduction is being exaggerated and, in my view, too much is being made of this.

There is no way whatsoever that I will negotiate with anyone in the French government to concede anything on the Irish corporation tax rate for that amount of money.”
Ireland is paying close to 6% for its €67.5 billion loan, while Greece and Portugal are paying closer to 5%.

Noonan also sent a message to French President Sarkozy, who is against any reduction in Irish interest rates, and to German Chancellor Angela Merkel who supports his stance.

He added: “To those who are opposing us and trying to force us to change our corporation tax rate, I tell them once more today that they have no negotiating position.

“The amounts of money are so small in regard to the adjustments we are being required to make that we will not concede.”

As for the French, they can go fry thier onions.
I do not think Sirpeter was being racist, the ku klux klan being mention because someone seems very racist in mentioning the polish people so many times in one short statement.
sirpeter: Not for the first time, the idiot is YOU. And the bigot and the racist, since you appear to associate the Ku Klux Klan with someone arguing for a prudent and controlled Irish immigration policy. What might link those two disparate elements is something only a racist imbecile like you could conjecture.
Increase the Corporate Tax? It was a decrease that created the Celtic Tiger! The Frogs want an increase to make FRANCE seem more competitive. The EU and the League of Nations will go down as jokes in history.
I realize the Finance Minister must deal with large numbers, and a long term horizon, but just the lower interest rate savings (148 million euros) represents roughly 220 Million US PER YEAR. 220 Million USD per ANNUM. Americans would certainly pause (albeit briefly) at such a number. Corporate tax rates may be non-negotiable, but 220 Million US is not, I submit, a trivial consideration. Of course, it may seem trivial if debt forgiveness is part of the overall resolution in this case.
Press Stop!! I agree Creaky is servile and sycophantic. But that's nothing new.*Creaky sings!!God save our gracious Queen.Long live our noble Queen" I also agree with Georgie Boy that those good for nothing immigrants have no appreciation for what Ireland has done for them.Stealing all our drink money *Gives Georgie a burning cross and a bed sheet.Hang on a sec!!! No I don't!! Georgie Boy is an idiot.*Walks back out.
Stop Press! "Georgie Gaga" has got to 'S' on his 'List of Big Words I must use one day'.
P.S. A sovereign nation is free to conduct its business on either side of the Rhine
correction, "then" re-negotiation
Has George made a statement in favor of interest rate reduction, the re-negotiation?
Towngate is servile and sycophantic. As to the EU, I am always struck by how little gratitude the EU, and specifically the governments of places like Poland etc. have shown for the huge favor Ireland has done them. Ireland has given work, housing, free education, health care (as good as the Irish get) translation services and God knows what else to huge numbers of Poles, latvians etc. Even today the Irish are BORROWING millions of dollars to pay child benefit for children (who may exist or may be just a scam) in places like Poland, Latvia etc. And they're BORROWING hundreds of millions to teach English to Polish, Latvian etc, childen in Ireland. But not onE word of thanks from these ungrateful b astards. Folks sometime criticize me for saying the Irish are stupid, but I think a Grand Jury would convict on the basis of the evidence I offer!
I do not believe in the principle of Veto. I cannot blame Noonan for trying to break the agreement Ireland made to dig them out of a hole, but he can't get anything with this 'big talk'. He should take his medicine and concentrate of getting better. Beggars can't be choosers! ... and beware ~ Sarkosy is in a very trigger-happy frame of mind these days!
