Chilling new audio tapes of a Fianna Fáil TD laughing about murdering suspected spies during the War of Independence are set to be aired for the first time.

The tapes, to be broadcast on TV3 as part of a new two-part documentary, include interviews with Martin Corry, a founding member of Fianna Fail who served in the Dáil (Irish parliament) for 40 years.

In the audio he talks about his role as Chief IRA executioner in a medieval torture vault named Sing Sing outside the village of Knockraha in Cork. The previously unheard recordings were obtained by investigating historian Eunan O’Halpin.

During the historical documentary 'In the name of the Republic' the politician recalls capturing, killing and burying several bodies in a bog. He can be heard chuckling as he speaks about the shootings and burials of victims of the War of Independence.

The documentary describes Corry as the chief executioner for the Cork IRA brigade from 1920 to 1922.

He spoke about bringing alleged spies to the damp graveyard vault where they were imprisoned before they were killed, he described it as “one of the most powerful jails in the 26 counties.”

Referring to another IRA gunman, Daithí Ó Sé, he recalled how local men who had been used as grave diggers protested over the volume of bodies been buried.

“Daithí [Ó Sé] delivered the two prisoners into Sing Sing himself and brought me up that night to shoot them,” Corry said.

“All the reaks were outside and they were laying down the law to us. [They were saying] there will be ghosts found around this place now. There’ll be no more men shot here. ‘Will I make bacon of them?’ says Daithí.

“And all of a sudden the skit [gun] came out of the pocket and bang bang. He shot two of them. Just like that. ‘C’mon we’re home, Corry’.”

Prof Professor Eunan O'Halpin of Trinity College discovers that there could be up to 90 people buried in the Rea bog. He is calling for justice for the list of 56 known disappeared victims of the War of Independence.

“The list includes only people we know with certainty were disappeared by the IRA and were never found,” he said. “The true figure is significantly higher.

“With war comes an inevitable loss of life, but the sad fact here is that many civilians were wrongly killed.

“It is now time to seek truth and justice for the disappeared. Where is their memorial?

“These victims have been forgotten for far too long.”

spies get what they deserve.lets hope those times never return.
You can't judge the past by the standards of the present. Read T. Ryle Dwyer's excellent study of the period about Michael Collin's Intelligence Operations and his "Squad" (Mercier: Cork, 2005). They were heady times, responded to with unofficial British state terrorism in the Black 'n' Tans, who were no choir boys! A little know fact being that HM EIIRs grandfather HM G-V-R threatened to abdicate if they weren't withdrawn from Ireland immediately, when he got wind of what skullduggery his government was up to, a fact quite probably unknown to An t'Óllamh Eunan Ó Halpín.
More IC self hating nonsense.
ANd here it goes again. Yet another attempt to portray the people who achieved Irish independence for the 26 counties as murderous thugs. Yes spies were executed, it was war time.Perhaps the producers of the documentary should have read the books written by Barry, Breen, O' Malley, and so many others form that time. They don't deny that excecutions took place, and they describe the lengths that they went to before anyone was executed. Were some innocents executed? Perhaps, but from all I have read in most instances those executed were collaborating with the British army, and were warned not to. Ireland is the only country that apologizes for fighting for its freedom. No wonder the place is such a mess.
The chickens are coming home to roost. In an all Ireland basis the sectarian murders where mirrored by the sectarian murderers in Ulster, the only difference, the Nationalists and the Catholic Irish Diaspora have been in denial about this. shades of Bosnia, the truth shall set you free, and in freedom real dialogue can begin,
curtisjohnson The article said suspected spies, confessions gained through torture are meaningless and as we learned from the internecine disputes between the various nationalist groups through the 1970's and 80's the accusation of being a tout was a good way of getting rid of a rival. As for hangings, have you ever heard the song strange fruit.
The Question is; What is the Difference between such Partisan Republican Sectarianism, and Sunday Dinner with the Romney`s at Buckingham Palace ?
Treason was a capital offense in most nations at the time. Contrast this to the pitch and cap and half hangings administered by the terror state to the indigenous population for daring to assert the right to self determination.
He was also corrupt
Well whadya know. Another sanctimonious cause celebé to beat ourselves up about. Look, people get killed during times of conflict, somtimes innocent ones too. Does this Trinity guy think the Anglo-Norman/Saxon conquest of Ireland was achieved with goose-feathered dusters? Or could be reversed with same? Next thing you'll know is that there'll be a "Justice for Ordinary Decent Informers" campaign. Another installment in the revisionist agenda.
They say the French after World War II were pretty brutal with any French people who "collaborated" with the German occupation of France. The French government describes them as "traitors".
