When demanding blood tests parents need to demand a CBC with differential, this will show the true picture, bands, neutralphils, basilphils ect which will indicate infection at a more accurate level.

Rory's story has impacted others to demand more for their kids. Good.

I think when we become mothers we develop and intuition for our child that was not present in our lives before. On several occasions I had to be very assertive with ER doc's to do a test even though they were cavalier and trying to tell me it was "nothing". One time while on vacation in Hawaii my son (age 4)became very ill with headache and stomach issues, and I instinctively felt something else was wrong. I had to plead with the doc to do a culture and his reply was " Now mother, this is just a virus" Being miles from home and knowing something else was going on, I decided to board a red-eye flight and take him to my pediatrician upon landing. When my doctor called for the lab results he was told my son had tested positive for a severe case of Salmonella poisoning. If something doesn't seem right to a parent who is the best judge of their child, most times its not.
