The FBI arrested a father and son from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on Thursday for making multiple harassing calls to Sarah Palin over a period of almost three years.

Craig Christy, 47, and his son Shawn, 22, were taken into custody this week on an indictment issued by an Alaska grand jury.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gallagher told the press: 'There's a level of obsession here that elevates the conduct from merely creepy to truly threatening.'

It's believed that Shawn Christy began attempting to contact Palin in late 2008. He told authorities that his cellphone had started clicking and making strange noises, which he began to attribute to Sarah Palin.

The elder Christy told the press that his son was simply contacting Sarah Palin in the hope that she could assist him with the curious noises. He also admitted he had contacted the Secret Service to determine if the agency had altered his phone.

The two Christys now stand accused of harassing Palin between August 1 and 9 by causing her telephone to continuously ring.

In 2010, Palin obtained a restraining order against Shawn Christy. Court documents quoted by the Associated Press this week claim he threatened Palin, sent her a receipt for a handgun purchase and said he was buying a one-way ticket to Alaska.

The Christy family has also claimed that Palin 'sexted' the younger man in 2009, according to reports, but they offered no evidence to support their claims.

According to the Associated Press, this year the younger Christy flew to Alaska on Palin's birthday in February, spending a day in Anchorage, where authorities monitored the visit.

Meanwhile, the elder Christy and his wife Mary filed for bankruptcy last year. This year, Wells Fargo Bank was granted permission to foreclose on the family's home in McAdoo, Pennsylvania.
