DeanJackson, I replied to your current comment back at "Abuse victim believes Irish pedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth murdered an American child," Kerry O'Shea, June 8, 2012, 8:31 AM. If you use the search engine near the IC masthead or the "News" drop-down menu, you can still find the article. I guess this discussion has spilled over onto other related articles--there are enough related articles! The way an IC commenter explained it to me a couple of years ago is that pedophiles are attracted to careers in the Church because often they have had sexual contact in their youth with pedophile priests and because the priesthood offers them opportunities to be in trusted positions among children, in schools, altar boy training, church camps and social events, etc. I referred you to David Berger's interviews on the gay culture in the Church-- who protects it and why-- and how it--quite paradoxically-- connects with the ultra-conservative politics of recent popes and Vatican staff.
kilgara I'll let you in on a secret Jesus never formed any church other did in his name and how they have violated his name.Jesus died a jew and never once went outside of the tenets of the Jewish religion. He was just another philosopher who's teachings have been corrupted over the centuries and called Christianity.
The Eucharistic congress is like a failed party to which no one went. They had the lowest turnout ever of the so called faithful. Moore is right as are the majority of Irish people, the Catholic church's day is done in Ireland.
kilgara, the church isn't surviving in Ireland and will be soon redundant. Moore speaks for the Irish people, the church speaks for pedophiles.
Ciaradexy, Your lamebrain retort that Moore could outdraw the Congress means nothing.Christs' church has endured through 2000years!I quote" You are Peter and upon this rock I wll build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.The abuse scandal was a "hell" for Eire but in time our Church will heal and endure until the end of time.Idiotic comments from Moore and you will quickly fade.
You're right, DeanJackson, that passing pedophile priests from one parish to another set the Church up for a massive crisis. But there's no evidence that anyone connected with the Vatican *planned* to precipitate a crisis. Consider Ireland, where bishops had influenced legislation since the current state's founding, and the USA, where a bishop's word to a police captain could forestall an investigation of charges against a priest. I once took a discrimination case of my own to federal court. In a private discussion, the judge asked what my goal was. "To discourage them from doing to others what they did to me," I said. "Forget it!" He replied, "The only question they'll ask themselves next time they want to discriminate is whether they can get away with it"-- this from a federal judge who'd served on the bench for 40 years. I conclude: It TAKES a massive crisis to change the culture of the institution, and look: it's not clear that this decades-long crisis HAS shifted the culture of "pastoral" care for accused priests toward justice for alleged victims. Today's NY Times has another story on the US bishops' fight against extending statutes of limitations on sex abuse of children.
DeanJackson, I've said it elsewhere, and I'll say it again here-- your statement is completely false that "the 1962 Vatican document "Crimen sollicitationis". . . . allowed for Bishops before and after a canonical trial to report the offending priest when child sexual abuse was the issue." Every person involved in a Church trial under canon law takes an oath of strict secrecy, subject to extreme penalties for breaking the oath. The 1962 document makes this secrecy requirement eminently clear, even more clear than earlier papal documents that also enforced secrecy in such cases. Even if someone uninvolved with the canon law trial were to report the crime to police, every witness and person with evidence in the case, including the accused himself, has already solemnly vowed never to speak of the matter, so a police investigation would go nowhere and no justice would ensue. The 1962 version of "Crimen sollicitationis" is available online, it's not lengthy, and there's plenty of commentary available on it. People should read it for themselves. It provides NO evidence for your conspiracy theory, quite the contrary, since it follows the path laid down by the Vatican for treatment of sex crimes. Only recently did the pope ALLOW bishops to cooperate with civil authority in nations that have mandatory reporting requirements.
Christys entitled to his opinion. A damn good one at that.
"Esatdigi" - 1)You may indeed have lots of "class" for all I know - however, the use of obscenities normally indicates the opposite. 2)With regard to your username, can you please tell us all why you added the last syllable? 3)With regard to my use of the word "demeans", can you please let us all know what mysterious meaning you might have for that word which would mean that my use of it is erroneous? (By the way, I should google "demeans" first, if I were you!). 4)As for my reporting your "abuse", there is a space for "obscenities" in the "Report Abuse" section. I consider your username is well qualified. I am not interested in whether or not others consider it as qualifying for a report. 5) As for your comment about my rosary beads, that particular remark is just another remark that demeans nobody but yourself. Kilgara, Christy Moore can pull a crowd 5 times that of the Eucharistic Congress and you dont hear of anyone protesting outside his gigs because of paedophilia so cop on! Less than half the anticipated crowd turned up at the opening mass and over half of those people were from abroad. It doesnt look like anyone under the age of 40 turned up! Time to go!
I've more class than you'll ever know, 'Eamo. And possibly a larger vocabulary to boot. 'Demeans' me, no less? )). Only you are taking this seriously, I wonder why. And only you are volunteering to 'neighborhood-alert' me. Even I don't capitalise my username..because its not MEANT to be serious..Now, keep polishing your PC screen for that aforementioned Filth, and give the rosary beads a diligent scrub whilst doing so. esatdigiw¤nk, ex Dublin, ex Ireland.
"Esatdigi" - Your username doesn't upset me at all. I simply don't think it has any place on a public forum. As I have said, it's main function is that it clearly demonstrates your lack of class. It demeans YOU. By the way, what on earth has the fact that you have been on the board longer than me got to do with it? Do elder patrons have first choice on obscenities? As for Irish Central publishing it, well, I have just now sent an "abuse report" pointing out your use of an obscenity. Over to them........... Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland.
The congress is a back slapping event for the failed RCC.The congress is irrelevant in a modern society.I wonder if any sexual assault victims will be asked to speak??
'Eamo, since my username is so upsetting such as it is, why as a consequence does IC see fit to publish my posts? I do believe I've been on this longer than you. If you abhor filth on your screen, help yourself to a can of Glade, apply some elbow-grease, ha ha.
