My son (half-Irish/American and half Filipino) was speared in the head with an elbow at the goal in a State Olympic Development game when he was 17. He was instantly knocked unconscious for about 30 seconds, but came back onto the pitch within 10 minutes. If he had NOT been knocked out by that elbow, another opposing team player who was running at full speed with his elbow forward aimed at my son's temple might have caused much greater injury. Some teams play solely on the basis of injuring their more talented opponents with complete encouragement from coaches who view winning at any cost as the sole achievement. Once my son realized this he became the toughest player on the field with the other teams' "enforcers" scared to get within 10 feet of him. Teams and coaches that rely on inflicting injuries should be banned for life AS A TEAM and as individuals from ever playing or coaching organized soccer at any level ever again. Soccer is a tough sport - as my son's dislocated knee and ankle surgery can attest - but it should not be the place for WWE or hockey-style intentional injury.
