The family of an Irish immigrant, who was shot dead in Florida last weekend, plan to bring his body home to Ireland for burial.

Originally from Templemore, Co Tipperary, Tom Walsh (43) was shot at point blank range at the restaurant where he worked on Saturday night.

It is understood he had been counting the night’s takings at the Mainstreet Grill restaurant in DeLand, near Daytona Beach after the venue had closed, when a gunman burst in and shot him before escaping with a small amount of cash.

When a kitchen worker discovered the Irish man’s body shortly before 11pm, he was already dead. No arrests have been made to date.

Walsh had been an employee of the restaurant since it opened in 1996 and owners Phil and Chantelle Martin are said to be very upset over the death.

The youngest of eight children, Walsh left Ireland in 1994 and first travelled to Europe before moving to the US.  He is survived by a daughter, Kira (12) and his ex-wife, Lisa Bennett.

“We just want to get him home because he would have wanted to be buried at home,” Brian Walsh told the Irish Times.

According to Brian, upon hearing the news on Sunday, their mother was in a state of shock. Walsh’s father died a number of years ago.

“He was the nicest guy you could ever meet, an absolute gentleman, an absolute all-round nice guy. He was really suited to the industry he was in because he was very good with people.” Brian added.

A memorial service for Walsh is planned for 10 AM on Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in De Land. Members of the public with any information about the crime are asked to call Detective Tim Hughes at 386-740-6907 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS (8477).

My condolences to the Walsh family in Tipperary. May they sense that Tom is sharing in the resurrected life and promises of Jesus Christ. Bishop Sean Walsh
The perpetrator (if ever caught)will most likely use the "stand your ground" law to escape punishment.MY condolences to Tom's family.
Follow-up to what I posted earlier. I had relatives who lived in Fortlauderdale back in the 70's. It sounded like a beautiful place to go at that time. I'm sorry that the place seems to have changed so much.
My sincere apologies for saying Brian instead of Tom Walsh. I get a little upset when people try to make Florida look like a nice place to live or visit. The tourist industry pushes a lot of hype.
I have lived in Florida for 42 yrs. In the past 15 yrs or so Fl. has become a killing field. Home invasions, murders, drugs, illegal drivers, hit and runs, dirty cops and politicians are everywhere in the state. It has become over run with brainless uncaring criminals. I would move away if I could. I can not. Bythebay must live in a rich protected areas or hasn't checked the statistics on the present state of Florida. I grieve with Brian's friends and family as I grieve for my own 21 yr. old son. Also I have bought and learned to handle a gun for my own protection.
Guns dont kill people... States that allow idiots to get guns easily kill people....
Very sad. I'm not planning any visits to Forida, though I've never been there. It's become one of the most violent places in the country.
What a tragedy, prayers for all. Probably another druggie's victim, I had to leave FL because of them in my neighbourhood and coming into my home. They need to legalise drugs, get the price down, manage them like booze and tobacco. How many more murders, robberies, lies and wasted police power can the society take? The Sheriffs deputies I dealt with were totally lazy, incompetent and scary idiots. Not ONE of them or their officers was worthy of any tax money.
MAY GOD BLESS TOM WALSH AND HIS FAMILY. SO SAD...I HOPE THEY CATCH THE CULPRIT (BEING NICE).
