When I was 12, a boy who lived next door to me told me that his dad borrowed a book 13 years earlier, and never returned it. I thought THAT was something, but nearly 80 years? That has to be a world record, for an overdue library book! Of course, the borrower is likely deceased. A relative may have found it in the borrower's personal belongings, and thought it best to do the right thing, nearly 80 years later!!
Someone finally got the courage up after 81 years to return a library book, and was able to do so by anonymously slipping it in with other returns, and the library wants the patron who returned the book to reveal him or herself!! They apparently have no understanding of the dreaded wrath of the librarian which many of us sense. Leave well enough alone and let the person who returned the book be.
