Irish prime minister Enda Kenny has said that the government is "working day and night" to get people off the dole and is launching "an international charm offensive at the level of business, politics, diplomacy" to rebuild Ireland's reputation.

Kenny made his comments at the Cork Chamber of Commerce last Friday, where he announced that the government would soon publish its action plan for jobs, which will target the manufacturing , agri-food, digital games, ICT and tourism sectors.

He also announced a Micro Finance Loan Fund aimed to help small businesses access credit and spoke of building up the marine industry.

"It is a wasted opportunity that our ocean economy only about 1.2 per cent of GDP compared with a world average of 2 per cent. Given our ample resources we must embrace our seas and no longer turn our back on it," said Kenny, according to TheJournal.ie.

The prime minister also spoke of the recent EU summit on a new fiscal agreement, saying that “responsible fiscal policy will bring stability and confidence not only to the Irish economy but to the European economy.”

“It is essential that future solutions to fiscal problems start to encourage more growth, more jobs, more exports,” Kenny added.

Thanks, sirpeter. Now I understand. I once had a teacher who could charm the deepest-buried ancient secret out of the silent Buddha. He had Irish ancestry, which accounted for his charm no doubt, but he learned to verbally manipulate people in the American diplomatic corps.
Enda! It would also be helpful if the Government worked night and day to go after the casino capitalist private bankers who broke the economy, instead of overtaxing and under welfaring the honest working class of Ireland who are innocent. An injustice is being perpetuated and you're not doing anything about it, like your predecessors. Are you all up to your beass necks in hock to those same bankers.
eiriamach What he means is to push the Irish likeability/charm in business.Example: Irish people are extremely good at psychologically weighing up a person very fast and knowing the right thing to say when dealing with business.Another example is the Irish appear to be very open when interacting with business people. But the Irish don't expose anything of importance when it comes to this warm up chat. It's a smart way of getting another person to show his hand to soon.I know exactly what Kenny means.Unfortunately when it came to the IMF.They knew we had a crap hand.Doesn't work so good then. But our good standing with the IMF at the moment is also a smart tactic.Wait and see.
What the heck is "an international charm offensive"? What's offensive about charm? Is he trying to make unemployed Irish charming to the point of being offensive? Is he using an Hibernian idiom that I just don't get at all? I usually admire Enda Kenny's speeches, but this phrase has me boluxed. Someone please explain?
Well if they're working day and night, then surely they can just work days on the problem and let an unemployed person work nights!
Yeah Joan the British were often the answer to Irish problems!
Considering I live in Texas, I would suggest that Irish government interests who are based in the need to look at San Antonio. British interests are coming quite frequently and have seen several of our major firms and caught some too. But it helps having an honorary British Consul living there.
