Irish leader Enda Kenny described Gerry Adam’s apology to the family of murdered Detective Jerry McCabe as “ironic."

Police officer Gerry McCabe was killed by the IRA in a botched robbery of a post office at Adare, Co. Limerick in 1996.

This week, 17-years after the incident occurred, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams apologized to the family.

“It’s ironic in a way that the leader of the Sinn Féin party decides to issue an apology 17 years after the incident occurred,” the Irish Prime Minister said at a press event, reports the Irish Times.

Kenny said he disagreed with Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary-Lou McDonald who said there was a difference between the IRA killing Irish police officers and killing RUC officers.

Adams said the death of police officer Adrian Donohue, who was gunned down in a robbery at a County Louth credit union last Friday was a trigger for his apology.

He said: “I want to apologise to Mrs Anne McCabe and the McCabe family, and to Garda (police officer) Ben O’Sullivan and to the families of other members of the state forces who were killed by republicans in the course of the conflict.”

“I am very sorry for the pain and loss inflicted on those families. No words of mine can remove that hurt. Dreadful events cannot be undone.

“But I want to restate that the resolve of Sinn Fein and of the majority of Irish people is to ensure that there is never, ever a recurrence of conflict.”

The FACT is the IRA killed more catholics
Pádraig Ó Riordáin! Some of us only revisit the past to point up hypo[deom]cracy. And to remind the terminally revised that 1922 was not the year zero in Irish h[y]story[ia]. We don't actually reside there. "The past is foreign country. They do things differently there!" (English novelist A J Ayer). A comment more applicable to present day Ireland apropos its past.
fallsthe rat distorting reality again. The statistics show that the overwhelming number of non-combatants were killed by the british terror state and their squatter allies. Weren’t you a squaddie, rat boy? How many women and children did you kill?
Fallser is at it again with his false logic.
cillowen - adams gave us a sense of justice for the treatment of nationalists in NI, no, his PIRA organisation outdid the BA, Loyalists & RUC in total by killing more catholics then all of these together, he sure did a lot for us.

A quick apology for the killing of Garda McCabe then here I am at the funeral of Garda Donoghue. I the bringer of peace to Ireland. The cameras see me; a funereal leader among leaders, I share their disgust, the cameras must record that and show it later. I also share their hypocrisy but they won't allow me to share it with them. I must stand outside their circles and be pointed at. Ridiculed. B*****ds! I brought peace, the cameras know that. The cameras also record that I am not attending the funeral of the Republican Dolours Price; a dastardly dissident. My place is now here among the leaders, for I am a leader too. I lead the peace process, it is my peace process. I lead the way in campaigning for the removal of the border. I also led a generation of young Republicans to early graves or long years in prison for a 32 County Socialist Republic and not a border poll. I know most of the graveyards in Ireland, the cameras recorded my presence in them - at the graves. This is where I am today, in a graveyard; the cameras are here too. And so are the other leaders. "Unscrupulous politicians and so called 'Peacemakers' " Was it really I who said that - in 1976?
