One very obvious difference betweeen most Irish people and U.S. Republicans is that the latter are very unlikely to surrender any of their nation's sovereignty to a higher authority, but the former diluted the sovereighty of 'independent' Ireland voting it into the E.U. Another major difference is that most Irish people are quite happy with Partition, but America's greatest Republican president reunited the divided nation. Lincolnian democracy is sadly lacking in Ireland as a whole.
Just shows you this guy's arid and impoverished notion of political left and right. A useless article. Nowhere does he address the question of social justice, inequality, poverty, government role in the economy etc. etc. These are the true criteria for judging if a society is left or right-leaning. Instead, he trots out the old tired Democrat nonsense which defines left wing as pro abortion. I'm anti-abortion, and a progressive. Tell me, someone, what's so left-wing about aborting babies?
