Irish police have dismantled the “Occupy Dame Street” Irish protest camp in an early morning operation that 100 police officers took part in.

A police statement made it clear that concerns about Dublin’s St.Patrick’s Parade and the safety of marchers was the key issue behind dismantling the camp.

Government officials had warned that the camp, which is located in the plaza of the Central Bank building opposite Trinity College, would have to go before the St.Patrick’s Parade celebrations which pass right by the site.

There was one arrest during the operation.

Later in the day, after the Dublin City Council had cleaned the area, some protesters attempted to re-erect their tents but the gardai (police) intervened (see photo above, taken at 12.30pm). The Central Bank has requested the gardai maintain a presence at the site.

An opinion poll on news site Journal.ie found that a large majority of those surveyed agreed with dismantling the camp which was set up outside Ireland’s Central Bank building last October in solidarity with the “Occupy New York”  protest.

Officials from Dublin Corporation dismantled the camp under police supervision after the organizers had refused requests to withdraw their protest.

Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar and City bosses had asked the protestors to move before the annual St Patrick’s Day parade which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city.

Just 15 protestors were on site outside the Central Bank when the police swooped at 3.30am on Thursday morning.

One protester was charged for public disorder after a cordon was erected around the camp.

Organized in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street style protests across the world, the Dublin group had been in place since October.

The Occupy Wall Street camp was dismantled by police in New York last November.

The Dublin protestors have vowed to come back according to local media reports.

One said: “We will hold a demonstration in front of the Central bank later on Thursday. Our protest is not over.

“We are hoping that the removal of the camp will result in more support as it did in other cities.”

Police maintained that they had communicated by letter and in person with the organizers in recent weeks and had raised concerns over health and safety issues ahead of the St Patrick’s Day parade.

“We sought their assistance and co-operation, however this was not forthcoming,” a police spokesman said.

“This morning’s operation continued for a number of hours as the site was cleared.

“(Police) priority is to ensure that all of St Patrick’s Day events and celebrations pass off smoothly and that all participants and the large crowds of spectators at the parade can access and egress the parade route without a risk or threat to their health and safety.”

Local businesses had also complained bitterly about the Occupy camp which they stated was costing them customers.

Abolish The Free State Now @!
Another dent in the armour of participatory democracy. Another sad misuse of An Garda Siochana (phon. Un Garda Shia-cauna)/Guardians of the Peace (Irish Police) to guard the peace of oligarchs. Payed for by overburdened Irish taxpayers. Used as glorified Pinkerton Agents to clear the plaza of the ugliest post-modern building in Dublin, which was built higher than planning permission permitted in the early 1970's. Calling all Irish-Americans! Boycott Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. Cancel all travel plans. It's a frightful bore anyway. You'll be missing very little.
It's funny. We live in a democracy. But yet the right to protest is removed. These few tents are no hassle and if you have ever been to St Paddy's day in Dublin, it's not a pretty sight. The few tents are not by far the worst thing that visitors will see. The people who did more damage to Ireland than a few tents in Dame st are living the high life. If you want to see occupy gone, then just put these people in jail. Regulate the banks so they cannot do this again. Solve the issue where ordinary people are paying for commercial debt. This is not ant-capitalism. Capitalism only works under good regulation, Greed will always overwhelm rationalism. I think we have our priorities wrong.
Perhaps it is time for the Occupy movement in Ireland to morph into a more personal form as it has in many American cities. All over the U.S., evicted Occupiers have moved from downtown parks to private residences in jeopardy of bank repossession and eviction. As the bank's lackeys carry stuff out to the curb, they carry it back. They link arms and refuse to leave. They focus the attention of the media on the injustices being carried out everyday by the 1 % hoping the 99% will wake up in time to save themselves. These jobless, college debt encumbered students are fightening for all of us. It is sad that some of us are too stupid (or rich) to appreciate their efforts. Power to the people and corporations are not people no matter how many times the Mittster tells the lie.
Oldsarge is a moronic clone of georgy boy, sarge is devoid of a sense of common decency.
God Bless them.... If i was still in my twenties there is no doubt I would be protesting right next to the occupiers..... Tended Bar in the South Street Seaport in NYC in the early 80's, Wall Steet Jerk's were always the biggest A-Holes in the Place! Decadent too, they couldn't snort enough or drink enough, real pigs with an insatiable need to impress everyone in the Bar....We used to rob them blind and they were too stupid and drunk to even know or care which end was up, real pigs. Give em hell, they deserve it.....
"National" Holiday ~ LOL ! Tripe over Glory ! ... LOL ! Let the I.R.A. Occupy Dublin ! Lets see who gets the Bucket !
Reading the posts here I often wonder, "Who are these people?" They are so full of hate and bigotry they cannot possible represent the American people; and they do not. Are they Irish-American? Surely they are not the descendents of the starving people who arrived in America with only rags on their backs? From reading most of your posts, it seems they are ready, now that they have got theirs, to kick those on the rungs below them off the ladder. And God forbid anyone who dares protest against the status quo.
These kids have more balls than the entire pack of idiots posting on this thread. While I may not support their tactics, I can certainly appreciate their vitality. Shame on you idiots with the stupid teabags hanging from your idiotic tricorn hats.
OleSarge, it's always a pleasure to read the bleatings of a bonhead that can lump Nazis and "Commies" into one ill-informed package of dogschit.
Full marks to whoever made this decision and the Garda.
GaelMcC whines: "Why were they allowed to set up camp in the first place?". Perhaps they were venting a grievance in the Public Square? Perhaps they were demonstrating their anger at the mess the greedy banks left us in? Isn't that what their movement is all about? Well?
