A Dublin man is awaiting sentence after he was found guilty of raping his mother on Mother’s Day in a case described by the judge as ‘distasteful and sordid’.
The 45-year-old rapist had pleaded not guilty to the rape at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court.
He had told the court that the sex at his mother’s home in March 2008 was ‘consensual’.
The Irish Times reports that the jury of four men and eight women took just over four hours of deliberations over two days to return the guilty verdict.
Justice Barry White excused them from jury service for life after telling them: “It is not often a jury has to deal with a trial as distasteful and sordid as this.”
The justice remanded the man in custody for sentencing on October 1st. He also ordered that the rapist be registered as a sex offender and a victim impact report be made available to the court.
The report states that, in evidence, the court heard the accused admitted having sex with his mother but said it was consensual and that one thing had ‘led to another’.
His 65-year-old mother, who lives alone, was awaiting surgery and was on medication including an opiate painkiller, sleeping tablets and benzodiazepine.

Conas a mhinionn tu sceal mar seo do do phaisti?! How do you explain a story like this to your children?! Is iomai an sceal a insint agus a mhiniu do do phaisti, ach nil aon rud mar seo! Mura bhfuil siad ina ndaoine fasta. Many a story to tell and to explain to your children, but not anything like this! Unless they are adults.

Hi,sirpeter-What do you think about this?? Well Patrick I would make a strong suggestion that the father keep out of the way of his son.Sigmund Freud was right after all it seems. It's a pure case of Oedipus complex which denotes the emotions and ideas that the mind keeps in the unconscious, via dynamic repression, that concentrate upon a boy’s desire to sexually possess his mother, and kill his father. There appears to be mental health issues in the family or maybe because she wasn't feeling very well and on a load of drugs she wanted her son to buy her a real present for Mother’s Day this year.Either way it's not really interesting as news Patrick. On an Internet scale it's pretty dull Patrick.Unless you have something against Dubliners.

This would never happen in Clones!

This story should be confined the the Mental Health Report, and kept confidencial. Or maybe we should assign a reporter to the Mental Health Hospitals. I can see it now as a tease to watch the evening news. "Man claims to be Superman, and can fly.. details at 11:00" At 11:00; show a man attempting to fly for the camera. The story about a son raping his mother is no better. This type of thing has happened in the past and will happen in the future. It should not be promoted by the news.

It is IC's willingness to lower the news bar toward its readership (or, worse, its desired readership,) and to highlight the most deviant of human behavior, which causes me concern...if it has an editorial viewpoint it wants to advance about maternal-filial incestuous behavior, then why not give us a Greek drama review of "Oedipus Rex" being performed outdoors in Kerry, or some such thing...anyone written a paper on such an editorial topic?...Sophocles gave us the memorable tragedy focusing (in part) on the issue, and Freud gave us the psychological nuts and bolts of the behavior...do we really need to oil deviance by learning in IC's next and latest read, of yet another incidence of outlandish sexual behavior...I am not a prude, but stop trying to move us into the odd confessional booth of yesteryear...One pastor's memoir would likely put this story with ho-hum coverage.

Depraved it certainly is! But it happened. And hiding this type of evil crime is not the answer. As for using him for shark bait, please consider the dignity of sharks!

Does IC search the gutter to bring us such depraved stories.

This goes beyond being in a sexual offence category. I hpoe this man gets appropriate mental health treatment.

Why is the editorship of Irish Central increasingly appealing to the lowest denominator???...Interested in sustaining the encroachment of sleaze?
