Donald Trump withdraws $5 million birth certificate lawsuit against Bill Maher
Billionaire claims that the comedian did not pay up after $5 million bet made on ‘The Tonight Show’
In February of 2013, Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against Bill Maher, claiming that the comedian, who was a guest along with Trump on ‘The Tonight Show’, did not follow through on a bet he made that night.
The bet in question involved Maher offering to pay $5 million to a charity of Trump’s choice if he could prove that he was not “spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan”. Maher’s bet was made in reference to Trump’s similar demand of Barack Obama last year during the presidential campaign which requested the release of the President’s birth certificate and college records.
Trump proceeded to file the suit against Maher after the comedian failed to pay up when Trump produced his birth certificate. In outrage at Maher, he said that the comedian had crossed the line by insulting his parents, "What he said about my father is disgraceful ... and what he said about my mother, who's deceased, was in a certain way, even more disgraceful". Maher responded by saying that Trump seemed "to be trying to set a bold new precedent that jokes on late-night talk shows are now legally binding agreements between the comedian and the person they’re making fun of,” and continued to say that “the legal system in this country is not a joke, [it] is not a toy for rich idiots to play with," theHill.com reveals.
Trump has withdrawn the suit against Maher but only temporarily as Michael Cohen, attorney to the billionaire, has said that “the lawsuit was temporarily withdrawn to be amended and refiled at a later date.”
