Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams underwent laser surgery for a prostate problem during his trip to New York last August.

According to the Irish Independent, details about the visit have emerged in documents that were filed by Friends of Sinn Fein, a party support group in the U.S.

Adams was kept overnight at the hospital after he underwent the procedure then spent nine days recovering at the apartment of a friend in Manhattan.

Sinn Fein has declined to give specific details about Adams' prostate problem but did go on to confirm that it was "not cancer" and that the treatment he received in New York had been a success.

"Mr Adams was advised that the procedure he required – which involved laser treatment – was best done in New York," the party said in a statement.

Sinn Fein also stated that the cost of the expensive treatment was taken care of by Adams himself.

"Friends of Sinn Fein did not pay any costs toward this treatment nor was there any cost to the Irish taxpayer," it said in a statement.

While in New York, Adams had dinner at Bobby Van's Steakhouse in Manhattan, hosted by the restaurant's president, Joseph Smith. Adams stayed at Mr Smith's home before and after his procedure.

Adams survived a major assassination attempt during The Troubles and has had health problems relating to that in subsequent years.

It must have been the brits who advised him AGAIN
Whoever gives Adams advice is once again found wanting Every doctor knows that the world's expert on Prostates is not to be found in the USA but cloer to home but let him find that out The cost in a french hospital for lazer surgery on prostate reduction is 19euro per day Once again noblesse oblige in this man's case as it always has done. Poor Mrs Mc Conville and others dispatched mercilessly in the pursuit of solidarity and Mother Ireland without access to a lazer surgeon must surely wish they also could have had treatment in their dying hours. n'est-ce pas Soldiers of the cause?
Dixie. I think the article was referring to the mock assination. The one with the doctored ammunition supplied with the magnum 44 from the brits.
Schlomo. Havent read anywhere of Gerry complaining on the statistics you have furnished. Surely something that required any Irish person to travel so far and spend so much money on a health issue would warrant a mention from a man in his position.
In a country of 4.5 million there are fewer than 30 qualified Consultant Urologists. Heck there's that many on one small Upper West-side Manhattan block. No wonder Gerry availled of the finest of medical care instead of the creaky HSE.
This says a lot about the fiasco of a country Ireland is that he has no faith in the disorganise mess of health system that Independence resulted in. The country he would not trust with his health is the same one he'd have Northern Protestants dragged into no doubt kicking and screaming all the way. Of course that's with the exception of those who can fly elsewhere in the world for health treatment.
For someone on the so called 'average industrial wage' Adams fairly lives the high life. Oh for and for the ill informed, Adams didn't survive a major assassination attempt, the British ensured it didn't happen; aided by Brian Nelson. The same Brian Nelson who was involved in the murder of many innocent Catholics including the solicitor Pat Fincuane helped save Gerry Adams in 1987.
Quite obviouslyGerry Adams has not had a radical prostatectomy. He has a transurethral resectioning of the prostate, only using a green light laser to burn away part of the prostate gland. The conventional resectioning of the prostate is done by 'reaming out' the restriction of the urethra. Laser prostate treatment is available in the UK on the NHS.
Gerry and peace agreement I'm still trying to fathom its much published worth. The raving 'bout Puke flag - The Planted Ones cleave to mother still - even RC McIlroy can't see himsel as being other than a UKer. They've gotten stuck in that Apartheid caper like practiced there and in Mandela's South Africa. Brit Empire was great with the divide and conquor bit - evidence is global. Human trafficking is the legacy they left for US and all to sort out. If sick is your cup of tea, march with the Proddy Masonic chaps and dress up like Charlie Chaplin for Merry O..
That's what growing up in a gerrymandered 6 county neo- provincial statlet does to ya! Squeezes yer nuts! The Rt Hon Téachta Dála (TD) could have a case against HM Govt for wrongful imprisonment - during Her Majesty's pleasure! Hardly the way to treat a Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Nortstead.
this says a lot about socialized medicine, if you care to hear it... I don't believe that this type of advanced procedure will be available to the common man here in US if obamacare truly takes full root...

Silling. I don`tknow about that. The royal Victoria has a brilliant record. Sure look at the great job they done on Gerry, shot four times with a Magnum 44 and they had him up and about within a few days with nothing more than a sling required for a week or two. Can`t work out how a flesh wound to the shoulder relates to ones prostate though.
After the Galway fiasco with that Indian lady, who would blame anyone for leaving Ireland to have surgery. Gerry Adams did the right thing and set a good example by having the sense to go to America for his medical requirements. In grown toe nails, warts, and hemorrhoids are all one could risk in The Hiber-Nation.
