Deputy subjected to abuse after complaint against ‘racist’ Lord Mayor of Naas
O’Riordain and his staff targeted as Scully awaits his fate
A Dail Deputy who helped bring the racist comments made by Naas Lord Mayor Darren Scully to light has been bombarded by a "barrage of abuse."
Labor Party member Aodhan O’Riordain reported Scully to police after he had claimed he would no longer represent "black African people."
Scully was forced to resign from his position as Mayor and was suspended from his job in the wake of the public furore over his remarks.
O’Riordain has filed a personal complaint against Scully with police in Dublin despite a "torrent of abuse" aimed at him personally and his staff.
“It has been a very bad time for me and my staff. People have called in and racially abused them. They have received abusive phone calls and letters and it’s very much upset them,” O’Riordain told the Evening Herald newspaper.
“This was a statement signed by me and not them. They should not have been affected by this.”
Scully’s Fine Gael party have threatened to expel the councillor when results of an internal investigation into his racist remarks are made public this week.
The controversial politician, married with a young family, is also to learn this week whether or not he will be re-instated by his employers.
