Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has stepped in to save the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dallas which was canceled due to lack of funds. However, his reason for saving it may prove controversial with Irish groups.

“I just thought it was fair that more people should be able to kill as many brain cells on Greenville Avenue as I have in my life," Cuban said.

“I passed out in many of the booths there.

“I said if I have lost enough brain cells there everybody will get that opportunity, too."

Cuban, who is Jewish, is a billionaire. In addition to the Mavericks, Cuban owns Landmark Theatres and Magnolia pictures and is Chairman of the HDTV cable network HDNET and an investor in the television series ‘Shark Tank.’

He was ranked 459th richest in the world by Forbes magazine in their annual list, with a wealth of over $2 billion and is married with two daughters and a son.

Cuban stated  parade officials will allow him to promote one of his companies, filesanywhere.com during the parade but he would not disclose how much money he had pumped in.

The parade had become a victim of its own success as organizers do not have the funds to pay for extra security for the 100,000 crowd who assemble at the Greenville Avenue location.

Organizers had given a deadline of February 17th to come up with the full amount of $100,000 to cover the entire cost of the parade, most of it for added security.

They had written to every business on the route and asked for $1,000 donation from each one to save the parade.

One of the key organizers Jake Levy, of Desperado's restaurant, a member of the committee, said that increased crowds have greatly added to the cost of the event.

"It's the biggest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the South," he said. "We rival New York, Boston, Chicago," he told the Dallas Observer.

The extra money pays for police, barricades and trash pickup he stated.

Fact is, excessive alcohol intake does damage and destroy grey matter/brain cells over time, which doesn't seem to detract from its promotion as the world's most widely available drug of choice. As an Irish addiction counsellor, I resent the correlation of alcoholism with Irish by the multinational intoxication industry.
Let me guess, his G. G. G. Granfather, Schlomo Epstein came from Moneygall.
are y'all sure that cuban isn't part irish. his sense of humour certainly is.
Let's face it St. Patrick has nothing to do with it. It's a taste of Ireland's alcoholic bing drinking.
For some it is a religious feast, for most it is a natioalistic holiday....nothing wrong with that as long as it is not overdone.
Saint Patrick's Day in Southern cities takes on elements of New Orleans Mardi Gras: beads, floats, trinkets. So far no one has told us how Irish-Americans are profaning a religious feast.
my comment sin binned - ic can't handle honesty
The guy has a sense of humour. Have we lost ours? And he put his hand in his pocket. Jim FitzPatrick. Ireland.
This guy was making a joke."I passed out in many of the booths there".That's the punchline. No need to punch him.
Firstly it is obvious what he said and it is by no means insulting. He has implied he has often enjoyed a party and feels others should too. Secondly as a business man, for giving funding to the event he is allowed to promote one of his companies so this is his main reason, he seen an opportunity where many people are assembled. Really clear how others misread this is upon comprehension.
Exactly irishpjk. Cuban’s comments are self depreciatory not anti-Irish. Irish Central is constantly sniffing out any remark that can be construed as a slight to the Irish. This permanent pity party is becoming kind of pathetic. Thanks for your generosity Mr. Cuban, didn't see any Irish reaching into their pockets!
How dumb can the city of Dallas be? Do they not understand how much revenue this parade brings in to the city?
Did 'Cuban' change his name before he lost his brain cells at the parade or after? At least most Irish are proud to leave their name as is.
It's OK. He's talking about the Irish. We can take it. (and if they don't like THAT they can............well, you know...........)
Its the Irish thanks, take the handout and insult giver. What is wrong wrong with his remarks, he admitts he has over indulged in drink and he knows people use this parade as an excuse to do the same. All facts of life, the problem with many of you is facts confuse you.
