The U.S. had a practical immigration policy up to about the mid 1960s. In those days permanent visas were granted only to to thse who did NO have a police record or a contagious disease, had a basic knowledge of English, and in the case of males of military age, were wilkling to register with the draft and be prepared to serve. In addition, green card-holders were required to register with the I.N.S. in january of every year - as I had to do during my 4 years in the Marine Corps as an Irish citizen.
To my knowlgde, no politician, prelate or editor called this system anti-immigrant, anti-foreigner, profiling, racism or anything else. It was simply the law of the land anw we as permanent residents, gladly complied with with such a law.

Let's put immigration in context instead of using it for political hyperbole. Any sovereign nation has a right to protect it's borders and limit immigration or it no longer is a sovereign nation. My great grandparents came here from Ireland in the 19th century and became American citizens. many fought in wars dating to the civil war. Americans have no problem with immigrants that come here legally and within the bounds of established law. Those that come here illegally taking jobs and using resources at a time when millions of Americans are unemployed are the problem. Those who come here across our southern border with no intentions of assimilating while demanding "rights" are not welcome.

If we could separate the illegal drug trafficking problem along with concerns over the cost of welfare programs from the problem of undocumented workers, we could exorcise the fears that stymie immigration reform. Most of the men and women who cross the USA's southern border cross it *every day* -- to work as migrant laborers in lettuce and soybean fields. They cross the border again every evening to return to Mexico. They take work that Americans will not do because it pays so poorly. Mexicans laborers pay taxes on their American salaries yet have no access to American health care, education, "welfare," or other publicly-supported benefits, and they do not run drugs across our border. Yes, some have stayed as "undocumented." We need their work, and we owe them and their children the same benefits as other workers have.

Does immigration reform mean that all futre immigrants who illegally enter the U.S. will be rewarded with full amnesty and easy citizenship within a few years of their arrival? Will reform also include a one-size-fits-all policy, whererby immigrants who legally enter with permanent visas and become hard working, tax-paying, English-speaking residents then be be categorized with those who come here illegally and cash in on all available free bnefits as the expense of U.S. taxpayers?

How unevolved human people are to still believe in boundaries/countries in this patriarchal system. Mother Earth provided for free for all her children. No one can own her as she never sold herself or divided herself out to groups of peoples and forcing one group to live inside the fence like sheep and the others inside other fences.
