The moralizing comments written here are quite shockingly anti-Christian. Joe's Great Uncle Ted waged a lifetime's struggle for the core Christian mandates: "hunger and thirst after justice," "Blessed are the peacemakers," feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and heal the sick. granted, he did not do well on "Thou shalt not commit adultery," but we saw his "righteousness exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees" who tore him down, as the narrow-minded do, by narrowing their focus to his personal moral failings. The sun rises "on the evil and the good," and the rain falls "on the just and the unjust" (Matt:5). When you reject the social Gospel and focus on narrow-minded judgments of the personal life, you reject the Gospel. If Joe follows Senator Ted's example, your carping will never diminish his commitment to progress or the importance of his work in public service.

It would seem that a better model is JoeIII's grandfather RFK ("Bobby") the Attorney General for his brother President JFK. Bobby apparently had a good Catholic moral compass imbued by his mother Rose. Ted did not appear to have the fine mind and moral disposition as his older brother Bobby (e.g., see some of the comments prior to this one). Have some respect for your grandfather, Joe III!

Teddie was the bear who chased all the women and drove his wife Joan to drink and death. He typifies the current stance of the Catholic Church. It is all about "social justice" and morality is a secondary consideration. For goodness sake, Cardinal Sean lauded him as his funeral. He was a well known profligate of whom the Catholic Church was very afraid. It would appear that the red headed nephew will take this as a role model to the very party that Jodi Kantor wrote that the Obamas hate the Irish Catholic politician. Actually, because of the ungodly coalition (radical women, non whites, non heterosexuals) formed by Obama with success, the Irish (12.2%, Blacks 12.5%)are on the verge of irrelvance. With the young (under 30) voting for Obama by 5 million, the behavior modification of the country is well on track to destroy the "opiate of the people". How many of the young even care about the "torch" lit by JFK? Now, this one more left Kennedy does not even remember the legacy of JFK, RFK, and to say nothing of his namesake. It is easy to see where this once great nation is going. Gerry Adams and BHO are "two peas in a pod". In the name of St. Patrick, one snake returned and another comes back to visit just before elections.

Oh Niall, you are far too smart an individual not to have realized that when you approved the headline for this story that you were going to attract the usual bilge here that comes whenever uncle Teddys name is mentioned. Of course as we are told in the article, Congressman Kennedy intends to model himself on his late uncle and the manner in which he handled himself in congress. Ted Kennedy, for all the problems in his personal behavior, was one of the best legislators in contemporary US history. I know little about the new congressman apart from him being a hardworking prosecutor and I wish him te best.

I hope he sets a new model for himself and forgets about the legacy of the family. We had enough of Ted.

Please, God, no!!!! All set to welcome him and forget about the Kennedy families, then he comes up with this. Let's see, what bridge can he cross and get away with it? OMG, (to late for Obama Must Go), please for the sake of the USA be your own person and try to bring a bit of decency to your family!!

Strange that the young man should choose Guncle Teddy rather than the Guncle he never knew, Joseph Kennedy II, killed during WWII and considered by everyone a bona fide hero.
I know it is more difficult to model oneself after a hero one never knew, but choosing Edward, the clearly flawed man who always had Chappaquidick on his conscience, seems unwise to me.
