Congressman Peter King announced he will step down as the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security this past weekend.

The New York Republican must resign due to GOP party rules that limit committee chairmanships to six years. He has already had a one year extension that he is about to complete.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, King acknowledged the risk his departure may cause to New York funding.

The Long Island Congressman will continue to represent New York’s 3rd Congressional District and next year will take over the House subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence.

“Nothing is definite in politics or government, so if there is a new homeland security secretary, I will try to work with them as chairman of the subcommittee, and work with the new chair,” King said.

King
has been a long-time champion supporter of Irish causes on Capitol Hill. He was criticized in 2011 for holding hearings on radicalization of Muslims in the U.S.

Mod why take this thread off
Smyrian,Your response to my comments do not address the issues raised,I will ask for the first and last time,do you think it was appropriate that the vice chairman of the house sub committee for Homeland Security Intelligence and Defence should have had working relationship with Gadaffi a person who was responsible for murdering over 300 American citizens over Lockerbie Scotland, and colluded in the Murder of NATO troops in N Ireland and 2000 British Subjects
Go check the paper trail of the English oppression and misery visited on the Irish for 800 years if you are that interested in detail, Puffin. Plenty of evidence to keep you occupied for years!
Smyrian,King hand a hand in it,along with Gadaffi, like the irony?Gadaffi with Semtex explosive and King with dollars through Noraid,Maybe there is still a paper trail linking Gadaffi to King, might be a good time to step aside I thinks
So King is solely responsible? Hmmm. Sounds mighty improbable, Puffin.
Smyrnian If King is a fine American,it probably explains why the good ole USA is in such a hole to-day.
King is an out an out Hypocrit. Claiming to support the IRA`s fight against occupation and all that it entailed. Yet he blends in like a well fitting glove when it comes to the wholesale abuse of human rights. But that said he is in par with the leadership of SF who now have a distorted view of what was then deemed abuse of the same.
Well Smyrnian I am not a true Irishman well that is interesting,on the 5th January 1976 the IRA lined up 11 protestants, and shot them dead,at Kingsmill,Congressman King supported the IRA Gerry Adams etal
Not so, Puffin. Not true at all. He does support an independent island of Ireland, free from British colonial rule, as do all true Irishmen and women.
A cynical Irish American politician who paid the green card, and who was supportive of the IRA,and the murder of Irish protestants and the Bombing of British Army installatio.ns, incidently the same Army he supports in Irag, not someone who would be welcome in my part of Ireland, would be safe to say one quarter of Irish people have no time for him
Actually his English is excellent. I have heard him speak many times. Your English writing is very poor, however, Snakehips!
Oh good, Maybe he can learn to speak ENglish with his extra time.
I'd vote for King for President. He tells it like it is and takes no PC nonsense.
King for President in the next election!
Peter King, the only Republican member of Congress to vote against both articles of impeachment regarding President Clinton.
