The Journal.ie reports that nearly 2,000 people have entered into civil partnerships since they first became legal in Ireland in April 2011. In 2012, 965 civil partnerships took place, with every county in Ireland hosting at least one.

Kieran Rose, chair of Gay and Lesbian Equality (GLEN) noted that these figures do not reflect the number of partnerships entered into abroad, thus indicating there is a greater number of legal civil partnerships in Ireland. Partnerships or marriages entered into abroad are automatically recognized in Ireland as civil partnerships and provide the same rights and entitlements.

Rose went on to say, “In every county and every city across Ireland, lesbian and gay couples are celebrating their love and commitment in front of family, friends and communities.

“These couples and their celebrations are changing forever the perceptions of lesbian and gay relationships.

“These newly civil partnered couples are laying the groundwork for the next step in the rapidly evolving progress towards marriage for lesbian and gay couples,” he added.

while i'm THRILLED and HAPPY for the MANY couples who entered into these partnerships....HOWEVER, i feel they should be called "MARRIAGES"....but, that's just what it is. alisa
I wish them all the Best. Congratulations.
Gearoud4 - thank you. The agenda screams at every issue. Holla, differing perspective and opinion; they do exist. Please do not try to assume anything on my behalf or try to belittle me. Give some respect. I find your views way out there but I respect your right to a different view.
The two posters below want to live in the kind of reactionary unquestioning Catholic theocracy Ireland was for most of the last century. They find it 'dispiriting' that people treat LGBT citizens like equals in law. They'll never have room for diversity of any kind so we can overlook their narrow minds.
Too right, Smyrnian. This search engines of this particular IC site seem be set by default to search for topics which are completely add odds with the Catholic viewpoint and in sympathy with their own leftist secularist and dispiriting agenda.
IC loves its gay topics/agenda. Just waiting now for the next pro-abortion story, an article about the Clinton's, the NY Times, anything containing the word Savita and of course, something glowing about Maureen Dowd and naturally something negative about the Catholic Church, no matter how obscure the topic. That about covers the IC agenda!
