City Council Speaker Christine Quinn the frontrunner in NYC Mayoral race as Scott Stringer drops out
Quinn's path to power gets a major boost
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has announced he is dropping out of the already crowded race for Mayor of New York City and will instead run for City Comptroller.
According to Gothamist, Stringer told Crain's, 'I am not dropping down, I’m stepping up.'
It is expected that City Speaker Christine Quinn will welcome his decision. Already the frontrunner, Quinn responded to the news by singing his praises, 'Scott is a fantastic public servant with an impressive record of accomplishment and will do great things for the city in the future.'
Meanwhile The New York Times reports that Quinn's aides and supporters could barely contain their delight that Stringer's withdrawal from the race leaves Quinn, a Chelsea resident, extremely well-positioned to pick up Stringer’s Manhattan support.
The Quinn team reportedly believes that she is now best positioned to win over West Side Democrats who were Stringer’s strength.
